Thinking of traveling to Tokyo Feb 2023 with 3 adults and a 17-month old babe. Looking for young toddler in Tokyo tips AND any tips on eating vegan in Tokyo!
My partner, sister in law & I are avid travelers & traveled to Japan together in 2017 and lovvvvvved it! But that was pre-baby, pre-pandemic, pre-being vegan, haha!!

Our experience with a toddler the same age in Fall 2019:
- bring a stroller, so helpful to carry around our stuff even tho our toddler rarely sat in it
we found there to be plenty of elevators
- we ate a lot of pasta, Japanese pasta is so good!
- fruit at regular supermarkets was reasonably priced.
- we spent a lot of time at the toy department of department stores. One even had an outdoor play gym setup!
Sorry, no tips for vegans!

Also here. The whole Decks shopping area has lots to see including old Game Center from the 50s and looks like old streets. Odaiba is a great family area. Inside also has this play center (huge) and it’s just one train ride from Tokyo (about 30 minutes). https://www.odaiba-decks.com/shop/tenant/the-kids.html

Traveling to Tokyo with a Toddler and Eating Vegan

Ahh, Tokyo! The bustling metropolis that seamlessly blends tradition and modernity, offering an unparalleled experience for travelers of all ages. If you're planning a trip to this vibrant city in February 2023 with three adults and a 17-month-old babe, you're in for an exciting adventure! Here are some tips to make your journey smooth and enjoyable.

Young Toddler in Tokyo Tips

  1. Baby-Friendly Accommodations: Look for hotels or Airbnbs that offer family-friendly amenities like cribs, high chairs, and even playrooms. Many hotels in Tokyo cater specifically to families with young children.
  2. Baby-Wearing: Tokyo is a pedestrian-friendly city, but the crowds can be overwhelming. Consider investing in a comfortable baby carrier to keep your little one close and your hands free.
  3. Stroller-Friendly Sights: While Tokyo is relatively stroller-friendly, be prepared for occasional stairs and crowded areas. Some must-visit spots for toddlers include the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, Yoyogi Park, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Children's Hall.
  4. Nursing/Diaper Changing Rooms: Most major attractions and shopping centers in Tokyo offer well-equipped nursing and diaper changing facilities, making it convenient for parents with young children.
  5. Pack Smart: Bring along essentials like snacks, toys, and a lightweight stroller or carrier to ensure your toddler stays comfortable during long days of sightseeing.

Eating Vegan in Tokyo

While traditional Japanese cuisine heavily relies on seafood and meat, Tokyo offers an abundance of plant-based options for vegan travelers. Here are some tips to help you navigate the vegan scene:

  1. Buddhist Temples: Many Buddhist temples in Tokyo offer delicious vegan shojin ryori (traditional Buddhist cuisine) meals. Renowned spots include Shinji Shokudo and Daishikiya.
  2. Vegan-Friendly Restaurants: Tokyo boasts a thriving vegan scene with dedicated restaurants like Ain Soph Journey, T's Tan Tan, and Veganic Café.
  3. Grocery Stores: Stock up on vegan snacks and ingredients at stores like Natural House, Nissin World Delicatessen, and Aeon Supermarkets.
  4. Happy Cow App: Download the Happy Cow app to easily locate vegan-friendly restaurants, cafés, and stores in your vicinity.
  5. Communicate Dietary Needs: Carry a Japanese vegan phrasebook or app to communicate your dietary preferences effectively with restaurant staff.

With a little preparation and these handy tips, you and your family are sure to have an incredible time exploring the wonders of Tokyo while catering to your toddler's needs and your vegan lifestyle. Embrace the journey and create cherished memories in this amazing city!
