So, I'm trying to convince my husband that we should jump on this Hong Kong/Tokyo deal. Ideas of fun things (not shopping) we could do there?
I don't have enough time to scour tripadvisor et al because I think we should book asap if we are going.

Most things in Hong Kong are expensive (especially accommodations). Food is reasonable if you stay out of "restaurants".
I'm going to Tokyo In November and I'm braced for sticker shock!

Loved it there. Stayed at one of the Ovolo hotels (super!). Ate and stayed well, not all expensive options.

Tokyo was marvelous and totally worth the effort of going, we stayed in an airbnb and had a terrific time. Had we not just come back 12 weeks ago, we would totally by it. Japan is incredible and although a bit pricy, well worth it. Art, culture, history, temples, all the stuff is amazing to see!!!

Even if you go to Hong Kong you can get cheap flights all around Asia on smaller carriers from there (like the Philippines - don't do Manila).
Last time I did Hong Kong I did one night on both ends of the trip and the rest of the days in Phuket.

Just returned from Tokyo. Best ever experience was the robot cabaret show. It is on utube. Not to be missed and will never be forgotten

Japan is not as bad as you would expect price wise if you do your homework

The yen has been devalued so your dollar goes further. They also have 7 11, lots McDonald's , and even The 100 Yen store! Don't eat in western style or fancy Japanese places. Lots of noodle shops. Subways and trains are not expensive!

However I couldn't afford to breathe the air in the Ginza....not at all like it used to be!

It's not too bad...while there are lots of expensive restaurants, there are also many very reasonable and good ones. Hotels - if you are willing to go on the very small side - will run you between $80 - 100 canadian per night (with wifi)...check trip advisor as they have lots of listings. We felt safe, ate well and enjoyed our stay. The metro is very easy to use and acceses most of the sites we were interested in. The Octopus card is a great deal and you can find out more about it on the net.

I agree with Linda, the Hong Kong Metro is the best in the world. Extremely efficient, fast and high capacity. Their whole transportation system is amazing (polar opposite to ours).

Tokyo is awesome ! Defs reccomend it!

Hong Kong is great from a travelling prospective. Fishing Village to see the pink dolphins, Ngong Ping gondola in Tung Chung, Happy Valley of course, the Peak, rent a junk, tons to do
