Itsly is fantastic. Rome, Florence, Tuscany all have so much to offer. A week there is great. Greece nit much to see and Athens is a very dirty city. Depends if you want to see history or not. I'd go back to Italy in a flash. When are you going?

Would you prebook hotels in diff cities, or stay a whole week in one place & do day trips?

We did 5 days in Rome through airbnb with a day trip to Pompeii, 3 days in Venice through airbnb, 3 days in the Cinque Terre through hotel and airbnb, and 6 days in Sardinia through hotel. I would recommend sticking to Rome and positano since you have so little time.

Amazing informative feedback!
Thanks everyone, I'm no longer into rushing around on vacations so I'll focus on Italy.

Ok Greece was my number 1 but got kinda swayed..... hmm

I guess it depends: do you want beach and drinks (Greece), or history and architecture- Italy

Hmmm, well, I drank a LOT of wine in Italy. The only beaches we hit were in Italy (Cinque Terre region). We saw amazing antiquities, history, and architecture in both. I think it depends on what you choose to see. What we didn't see what in Greece was the ostentatious and waste of resources on churches and cathedrals.

It's a two hour boat ride to the island of Delos. I saw more history there than I saw all of Europe.

You can't do both properly in that time Melissa. I would say go to Barcelona Spain and Ibiza Spain absolutely AMAZING..... just my opinion

I agree with most folks...just do one. I tell people that Italy makes the best first Europe trip. With that time i would book a good room in Rome and day trip out from there. You can be in Florance, Pisa or Pompeii in and hour or two max by train. Then see Rome at night.

I agree that you can't do both in that short of a time frame. Both Italy and Greece are amazing (loved the greek isles particularily vs. the mainland) but I would suggest Italy for your first Europe Trip!! Rome, Venice, Sorrento etc were all amazing.

I thought Rome was very overrated. But loved Venice, so definitely recommend there. Take the bullet train from one to the other to see both cities. Then perhaps a day trip from Rome to either Pisa or Pompeii. and your week is up I think.

I would do Italy only. Travel by train.

It depends on how your like to vacation. To do both countries, you would be travelling every day and would see a couple main highlights in a few locations. I prefer more relaxed travel. We spent three weeks in Italy, saw sites every day, and still barely scratched the surface. And I like to have an espresso with locals at the local coffee bar and spend an hour or two sipping a glass of wine in a beautiful piazza watching life go by. No matter which way you do it, they are beautiful countries and you will enjoy the experience.

Thank you!! I keep wondering how people see five countries in ten days. My husband took me to Italy for three weeks for my 40th birthday and we saw a lot, but yet there was still so much to see!

We aren't museum people and love to see all we can in short spurts! Loved Italy! We flew into Naples (from Paris as we spent a couple days there first). Private driver to Positano for 3 nights. Then off to Rome. Took the ferry to Salerno- beautiful quick trip, train to Naples and high speed train to Rome. 4 nights in Rome, which we loved, then home from Rome. Stayed in airbnb's and have always had great luck!

Not a long enough trip to see both! Greece has so many islands..I personally spent 2 weeks in Greece (3 Islands + Athens) and it wasn't long enough! I've never been to Italy but I would suggest that over Greece. If you want to travel around you won't have to worry about ferry rides between islands which could take up a lot of time.

You can! Do four days each! But Italys coast (Positano) is where you defn want to be! And Greece, try to stay bear the water (in the island)

If you can manage to make your travelling between cities be at night so you can sleep, then maybe you can do both! Otherwise just pick one. It's like asking if someone can experience all of the states and Canada in a week-- imo no lol

I've been to both places. Greece, with the cruise, was amazing. We stayed in a little boutique hotel in Athens. One morning, we woke up and street market had sprung up. We walked to the Acropolis, because we love to walk. It took us the whole day because we just explored every nook and cranny.

I'm with Ron. It's so much travel and just a rush, rush, rush. I'd suggest Greece including a 3 day island cruise that stops in Ephesus. Amazing! Spend a couple days in Athens then do a day trip or two to other places. Well worth the time spent.

Italy for a First Trip to Europe: 7-8 Days of Pure Bliss

If you're planning your first trip to Europe, Italy is an excellent choice. With its captivating history, mouthwatering cuisine, vibrant culture, and breathtaking landscapes, this country offers an unforgettable experience for first-time visitors. Here are some tips and advice to make the most of your 7-8 day Italian adventure:

Prioritize Your Destinations

With limited time, it's crucial to narrow down your itinerary. Rome, Florence, and Venice are the classic trio, offering a taste of Italy's rich history, art, and architecture. However, if you prefer a more relaxed pace, consider focusing on one or two cities and exploring the surrounding regions.

Embrace the Dolce Vita

Italians are masters of the art of living well, and you should embrace this philosophy during your trip. Slow down, savor the local cuisine, sip on a glass of wine, and immerse yourself in the laid-back Italian lifestyle. Indulge in gelato at every opportunity, and don't miss out on the aperitivo culture – a pre-dinner drink with tasty snacks.

Explore the Neighborhoods

While famous landmarks are a must-see, take the time to wander through the charming neighborhoods and piazzas. Here, you'll discover the true soul of Italy – locals going about their daily routines, vibrant markets, and hidden gems that tourists often miss.

Book Accommodation Wisely

Choose your accommodation carefully, as it can significantly impact your overall experience. Consider staying in centrally located hotels or Airbnbs to minimize travel time and maximize your exploration. Additionally, look for accommodations with amenities like breakfast or a kitchen to save on dining costs.

Plan for Unexpected Delights

Italy is renowned for its surprises, so leave room in your itinerary for spontaneous discoveries. Strike up conversations with locals, follow the sound of live music, or simply get lost in the winding streets – these unplanned moments often lead to the most memorable experiences.

Respect the Culture

As with any travel destination, it's essential to respect the local culture and customs. Dress modestly when visiting religious sites, learn a few Italian phrases to connect with locals, and remember that Italians value leisure time and long meals. Embrace the Italian way of life, and you'll be rewarded with an authentic and enriching experience.

Italy is a captivating destination that will leave you enchanted and yearning for more. With these tips in mind, your first trip to Europe will be a truly unforgettable adventure.
