Great thing about Italy is everything is so accessible by train. Florence is really nice, has both modern and historic sides to it. The area of Cinque Terra is incredible, it’s like stepping back in time. If you go to Rome, stay downtown and you can walk to everything…..

I loved Lucca!! I stayed in a palace there and it was stunning. Make sure to rent a bike and do the city wall. It is a great place to access Cinque Terre from. We did Pisa on our way from Lucca to Livorno and I can recommend not to rush Pisa. Message me if you want more info.

Exploring the Enchanting City of Lucca, Italy

Nestled in the heart of Tuscany, Lucca is a gem that often gets overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Florence and Pisa. However, this charming walled city has a unique charm that captivates every visitor. From its ancient Roman amphitheater to its charming piazzas, Lucca offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and culinary delights.

The Ancient Walls of Lucca

One of the most iconic landmarks of Lucca is its remarkably preserved Renaissance-era walls. These massive walls, which span approximately 4 kilometers, offer a scenic walking or biking path with breathtaking views of the city's rooftops and surrounding Tuscan countryside. Strolling or cycling along the walls is a must-do activity that allows you to soak in the city's atmosphere and admire its architectural marvels.

Piazza dell'Anfiteatro

At the heart of Lucca lies the stunning Piazza dell'Anfiteatro, a unique oval-shaped piazza built on the ruins of a Roman amphitheater. This iconic square is lined with charming cafes, gelaterias, and restaurants, making it the perfect spot for people-watching, enjoying a delicious Tuscan meal, or savoring a scoop of creamy gelato.

Cattedrale di San Martino

Lucca's Cathedral of San Martino is a true masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. This imposing structure, with its intricate facade and impressive bell tower, dates back to the 11th century and houses a wealth of artistic treasures, including the famous carved wooden crucifix by Nicola Pisano and the magnificent Volto Santo (Holy Face).

Day Trips to Florence and Pisa

While Lucca itself is a delight to explore, its proximity to other Tuscan gems makes it an ideal base for day trips. Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance, is just an hour's drive away, offering the opportunity to marvel at iconic masterpieces like Michelangelo's David and the magnificent Duomo. Alternatively, the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa is just a 30-minute drive from Lucca, making it an easy and convenient excursion.

Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply seeking a quintessential Tuscan experience, Lucca is a destination that should not be missed. With its rich heritage, charming atmosphere, and delectable cuisine, this captivating city will leave you enchanted and longing to return.
