Head over to Beppu for the hot-springs and do the Hells! It's one of my fondest memories from Japan. You should also head to Nagasaki if you're in the area, and Kumamoto Castle is worth dropping by.

When you are going from Fukuoka to Yamaguchi, you can go to an underwater tunnel called Kanmon tunnel where you can step on the border of Fukuoka and Yamaguchi underwater, which is kind of cool. Or you can skip it by taking a local or bullet train, but Moji-ko/Moji port (on Fukuoka side) is a cute small town, and Karato market (on Yamaguchi side) is a good fish market, so something to think about?
Akiyoshidai is a really cool limestone cave in Yamaguchi, but it is a little bit out of the way.
If you go to Nagasaki, I hear Sasebo burger is really good!

Skip Osaka and stay 3 nights in Kyoto (incredible!), or maybe 1 night in Nara and 2 Kyoto.

Get the Japan Rail Pass and wifi hotspot. Pick up at the airport and drop off at the Tokyo airport. I used the rail pass to get from Fukuoka to Tokyo just make sure you are on the correct train designated for rail pass passengers. It allows you on local trains along with Shinkansen

Exploring Kyushu and Beyond: A 15-Day Japan Adventure

Posted on [Current Date]

Japan is a country that captivates with its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and delicious cuisine. For your upcoming 15-day adventure with your boyfriend and four of his friends, you've chosen to explore the lesser-known but equally enchanting Kyushu region, while also revisiting some familiar destinations.

Starting Point: Fukuoka

Your journey will begin in Fukuoka, a vibrant city on the northern shore of Kyushu. Famous for its yatai (food stalls), Fukuoka is a perfect introduction to the culinary delights of the region. Spend a day or two exploring the city's historic districts, indulging in local specialties like tonkotsu ramen and Hakata-style mentaiko (spicy cod roe).

Exploring Kyushu

From Fukuoka, you'll have the opportunity to delve into the natural wonders and cultural gems of Kyushu. Here are some suggested destinations:

  • Nagasaki: Steeped in history, Nagasaki offers a poignant glimpse into Japan's past. Visit the Atomic Bomb Museum and the serene Glover Garden for a deeper understanding of the city's legacy.
  • Kumamoto: Home to the majestic Kumamoto Castle, this city also boasts the picturesque Suizenji Garden, a Japanese-style landscape garden that showcases miniature replicas of famous sights from around Japan.
  • Beppu: Renowned for its hot springs, Beppu is a relaxing haven. Indulge in the therapeutic waters of the Beppu Hells, a series of hot spring pools that range in color and temperature.
  • Yakushima: For nature lovers, a side trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Yakushima Island is a must. Explore the ancient cedar forests and hike through the stunning Yakusugi Land, home to some of Japan's oldest trees.

Venturing Beyond Kyushu

While Kyushu will be the primary focus of your trip, you can also incorporate a few days to revisit other iconic destinations in Japan. Here are some suggestions:

  • Hiroshima: Pay your respects at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, a poignant reminder of the devastating effects of war.
  • Kyoto: Immerse yourself in the cultural heart of Japan by exploring the stunning temples, shrines, and gardens of Kyoto. Don't miss the iconic Fushimi Inari Taisha and the tranquil Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
  • Tokyo: End your journey in the vibrant metropolis of Tokyo. From the neon-lit streets of Shinjuku to the serene gardens of the Imperial Palace, Tokyo offers a captivating blend of modernity and tradition.

With careful planning and an open mind, your 15-day adventure in Japan promises to be a memorable and enriching experience. Embrace the unique blend of natural beauty, rich heritage, and delectable cuisine that this remarkable country has to offer.
