Are you exchanging USD or CAD? That makes a difference in rate. If you have a hard currency you'll fare better than with the loonie over there.

which currency you are trading doesn't matter. USDJPY or CADJPY, CADJPY rate is implied from USDCAD and USDJPY. It is all the same.

Those who tell you to withdraw from an ATM have never been to Japan.
You can't use your bank card here. Credit cards aren't as widely accepted either. Bring cash.
Better to exchange USD to yen at this time. If it's CAD then it's still better to exchange there than here. You will get taken advantage of here.
I live in Japan so I know.

Tommy. I went to japan many time, and I did an exchange there for half year in Nagoya University. I have absolutely no problem withdrawing money from most of the ATM anywhere in japan. Mostly I use the ATM at Lawson and 7-11.
Thanks

We were in Japan last year and again in March. We also had no problem withdrawing money from an ATM at the 7-11, from both our Canadian and U.S. bank accounts.

I lived in the rural countryside for 3 years and 3 years in an urban setting.....you can use ATMs at convenience stores and the ATMs at post offices (beware of their business hours). You can also widely use credit cards.

Get Yens: Here or in Japan?

If you're traveling to Japan tomorrow, you might be wondering whether it's better to exchange your currency for Japanese yen before your trip or once you arrive in Japan. Well, let's dive into the details to help you make an informed decision.

Exchange Rates

One of the most crucial factors to consider is the exchange rate. Generally speaking, you'll get a better rate when exchanging currencies in the destination country. This is because banks and currency exchange offices in your home country often add hidden fees and commissions to their exchange rates, making it more expensive to convert your money.

Convenience

While getting yens in Japan may offer a better exchange rate, exchanging currency before your trip can be more convenient. You'll have some spending money ready for when you land, which can be helpful for taxis, tips, or any immediate expenses. Additionally, you won't have to worry about finding a currency exchange office right away or dealing with unfamiliar processes in a foreign country.

Recommendations

Here's what we recommend:

  1. Exchange a small amount of currency (enough for a day or two) before your trip for convenience.
  2. Once in Japan, locate a reputable currency exchange office or bank and exchange the majority of your funds there for a better rate.
  3. Consider using a travel-friendly credit or debit card for larger purchases, as they often offer competitive exchange rates and eliminate the need for cash transactions.

By following these steps, you'll have the convenience of having some yens on hand upon arrival while still taking advantage of the better exchange rates in Japan for the bulk of your funds.

Enjoy your trip to Japan, and don't forget to immerse yourself in the rich culture and stunning landscapes this incredible country has to offer!
