Recommendation for Rome needed! If you only had one thing that was a MUST DO (activity and/or site) in Rome, for a traveller who has previously visited and seen all the main tourist sites, what do you recommend? And is there ONE restaurant that is MUST EAT at - no matter type of food or price point. Much appreciated!

Shirley hi
Appian Way for sure - highlight of our last trip to Rome. We met "Doug" the dog who followed us for the day. If you go and happen to see him (yellow lab) say "hi"!

Get lost on some sidestreets. Some lovely food in little family owned businesses. We stayed in traversa by the river. Avoid restaurants close to vatican!

I am staying in the Trastavere area also - outside of the main hub and much quieter. Brilliant.

Hidden Gems of Rome: A Local's Perspective

If you've already explored the iconic landmarks like the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, and Vatican City, it's time to venture off the beaten path and experience Rome like a true local. After all, the Eternal City is brimming with hidden treasures that often go unnoticed by tourists.

Must-Do Activity: Explore the Quirky Neighborhood of Trastevere

Nestled on the west bank of the Tiber River, Trastevere is a charming neighborhood that exudes an authentic Roman vibe. Its narrow, cobblestone streets are lined with ivy-covered buildings, artisanal shops, and lively piazzas where locals gather for their evening passeggiata (evening stroll). Wander through this enchanting labyrinth of alleys, stopping to admire the street art, peek into hidden churches, and savor the buzz of vibrant cafés and trattorias.

One of the highlights of Trastevere is the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, a picturesque square anchored by the stunning Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere. Grab a gelato and soak in the atmosphere as street performers and artists animate the piazza. As the sun sets, join the locals for an aperitivo (pre-dinner drinks and snacks) at one of the bustling outdoor bars and immerse yourself in the infectious energy of this Roman neighborhood.

Must-Eat Restaurant: Felice a Testaccio

If there's one restaurant that truly captures the essence of Roman cuisine, it's Felice a Testaccio. Located in the working-class neighborhood of Testaccio, this no-frills trattoria has been serving up authentic Roman dishes since 1936. Felice a Testaccio is a favorite among locals and savvy travelers alike, renowned for its unpretentious atmosphere and soul-satisfying fare.

The menu showcases classic Roman specialties like cacio e pepe (pasta with pecorino cheese and black pepper), trippa alla romana (tripe stew), and pajata (veal intestines). While these might sound intimidating to some, the flavors are simply divine, reflecting the rich culinary heritage of the city. Don't miss out on the legendary coda alla vaccinara (oxtail stew) or the mouthwatering suppli (fried rice croquettes stuffed with meat and cheese).

Felice a Testaccio is a true gem, offering an authentic taste of Rome's working-class cuisine without the touristy frills. Prepare to be transported to a time when food was simple, hearty, and deeply rooted in tradition. Whether you're a food connoisseur or a curious traveler, this legendary trattoria is a must-visit for anyone seeking an unforgettable Roman dining experience.
