I found emailing hotels and B&Bs was easier...they had more availabilities than it said on hotel sites.

We stayed at two B&B's in Rome. They are more like hotel rooms in an apartment building. Some serve a wonderful breakfast, some give you a coupon for a small café nearby where you get a coffee/juice and a pastry. We saved a lot of money this way and loved it!

We stayed at Hotel Margaret in Rome. It was a great location, modest accommodations (with which we were happy, we were just sleeping there), breakfast was included & Monica at the desk was wonderful. There's also a fantastic little restaurant across the street & down a handful of steps. Best prosciutto & Buffala mozza I had in all of Italy!

We use booking.com when we travel. I also used tripadvisor to review the places first. It's worked out well for us. I haven't used airbnb.com myself, but I heard its great if you'd like to find something more like an appartment rental. It's a nice option to have your "own place" if you're staying in a place for more than a day or 2. I know lots of people that use it and love it.
