We travelled all three last summer on our honey moon. We had better luck and found it more affordable to rent places on vrbo that were in great locations. I can message you some neighbourhoods we stayed in and suggestions if you are interested.

Florence we stayed at the albert inn... (I think that's what it is called) Rome. .. you can almost stay anywhere...everything is walking distance. Be prepared that the accommodations all small and not always the nicest.
Crystal
We did Camping Albedero in all cities. Prepared tents with everything you need or cabins. Florence was on the hill overlooking the whole city. Gorgeous.
Anywhere you stay will lead to adventure as you travel to the "must see" sites

We stayed at Hotel Margaret in Rome 5 years ago & were very happy. Fantastic little restaurant across the street too!
Brenda
Florence was horrid! There are gypsies running around that pickpocket tourists.
Venice was AMAZING, and it is the only place in Italy I would go again out of Milan, Florence, Venice and Rome. I would like to check out Naples one day.
Michelle
That's funny you say that, we had the opposite experience. We found Florence quiet and not nearly as touristy where we couldn't get out of Venice quick enough.
Tammy
Thanks everyone for your advice and feedback! First time visiting Italy in August so I'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions!

@Brenda - I've been warned to be on the lookout for pickpocketers by my Italian client and theft is apparently terrible in Italy right now because people are migrating into the city opening up businesses and driving the existing owners out of business! I think it's bound to happen anywhere but perhaps maybe more frequent in certain places.

When we went to Rome, we stayed at the following airbnb booking. It's right by St Peter's and had a great view at night of the building.

In Venice we stayed on one of the islands: Lido tge canals can get smelly in the summer

Also check out hostels. Most of them offer private rooms with ensuites and are usually cheaper than hotels. Rome - The Yellow, Florence - Plus Florence, Venice - Camping Rialto , all great experiences.
Linda
Nothing inexpensive in Venice,Rome or Florence but worth every penny.

The Best Locations to Stay in Rome, Florence/Tuscany, and Venice
When visiting the iconic cities of Italy, choosing the right location to stay can make a world of difference in your travel experience. Here are some recommendations for the best areas to consider in Rome, Florence/Tuscany, and Venice, along with websites to find reasonably priced hotels.
Rome
For easy access to Rome's most famous attractions, the historic center is an excellent choice. Areas like Navona, Campo de' Fiori, and Trevi are within walking distance of the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Trevi Fountain, and the Vatican City. These neighborhoods are also bustling with charming cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops.
Florence/Tuscany
In Florence, the best area to stay is the city center, around the Duomo and Piazza della Signoria. This central location puts you within walking distance of iconic landmarks like the Galleria dell'Accademia (home to Michelangelo's David), the Uffizi Gallery, and the Ponte Vecchio bridge. If you're exploring Tuscany, consider staying in a picturesque town like Siena, San Gimignano, or Montepulciano, where you can immerse yourself in the region's rural charm and vineyards.
Venice
For Venice, the ideal location is the San Marco or Castello neighborhoods. These areas are close to St. Mark's Square, the Rialto Bridge, and the Grand Canal, allowing you to easily explore the city's iconic canals, bridges, and piazzas on foot. Additionally, you'll find plenty of excellent restaurants and gelato shops in these historic districts.

When searching for hotels, be sure to filter your search by location, budget, and desired amenities. Additionally, consider booking well in advance to take advantage of early bird discounts and secure your preferred accommodation.
