i went to a 5 star and I did not feel like the food was good at all. The only good meal I had was in Havana at a restaurant. I starved otherwise.

Go to Barcelo Maya in Mexico, awesome resort. If you're gonna do the Princess go to the Yucatan side.

Depends on the type of vacation you’re looking for. Mexico has better food and amenities but we prefer Cuba for the people. We just got home from our 8th visit to Cuba and it was wonderful. I haven’t stayed at either of the resorts you’ve listed but have been to both areas. Jibacoa is half way between Varadero and Havana. It’s very quiet but offers easy access for day trips to Havana and Mantanzas if you wanted things to do. The resort you listed in Varadero looks lovely and in my opinion you can’t go wrong choosing that one. Cuba is still in recovery mode- the pandemic affected them greatly. I have zero regrets about being there last week, but we knew what to expect and were ok with it.

We were in Varadero over Xmas and New Years for 9 days. It was our first time. Super glad we went so we could see Havana and the classic cars but we wouldn’t go back. Cuba tries but they just can’t get it up over about a 3 or 4 star. We stayed at Melia Las Americas. The food was better than what I was expecting but drinks were not good. We ended up mostly drinking wine. Cuba is not the place to do a 3 star hotel, stay at a 5 star. It would be equivalent to a 3-4 star in Mexico. The beach in Varadero was fantastic though. Definitely in our top 3. If you do go to Cuba don’t expect Mexico standards and you’ll be fine

Couldn't say enough good things about the Iberostar chain. I'm sure you won't be disappointed

We were at the Ocean Coral and Turquesa for Christmas and we wouldn't go back. The food wasn't good, they kept pushing us to purchase bottles of wine rather than a glass with dinner, dinner reservations we're the worst (could only book for that day, nothing in advance).

We went to the Iberostar Iguana Azul a few years ago - would NOT recommend
.
Nice places in Cuba - the beach at Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria is
A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

We got back from Grand Sunset Princess on Jan 22 (Jan 15-22). First time there and really liked it. Food was very good. Grounds were beautiful. Lots of a la carte restaurants options (we tried 4 during our week).
Beach was pretty shallow if that makes a difference to ur beach preferences. Lots of pools/interconnected pool spaces away from the "main"/ activity pool if u like peace and quiet.
PCR booking and testing on site were seamless on ur phone. Results took over 36 hrs vs 24hrs promised but that's on the hospital/lab contract they have.
Would recommend and would go again!

We stayed at iberostar laguna azul and everyone told us the food in Cuba was terrible and to bring spices and hot sauce. We got there and they had an entire table of sauces and the food was good!
But it is a third world country so keeping that in mind: some times the toilet seats are missing and there simply aren't replacements at the store so you wait. The hottub was broken when we were there- again no parts. Nothing can be done.
The staff were amazing. The entertainment was fantastic and the beach was clean.
I prefer the atmosphere in Cuba to the western side of Mexico but have not been to the East side (I hear it's very different).

Grand Sunset is almost too big. But stay in the VIP section if thats your choice.

No to Iberostar Laguana Azul - 5 years ago - no toilet seats, awful food. Recycled breakfast. Aside from that Cuba is beautiful. If you aren’t picky the location overshadows the things we take for granted. I have had many friends who have stayed elsewhere though and their experiences all topped Iberostar

I loved Memories Jibacoa. There is a reef just off the beach for snorkeling and the staff were lovely. There is a little restaurant just up the road that serves the best pina coladas. I haven’t been in about 6 yrs tho.
