The last time I was there you could walk out for a long way so no snorkelling there. But you can get to other beaches close by. And there is a lagoon in Akumel called Yal Ku which is amazing for snorkelling. The best thing about this resort is it's located one block off 5th ave where all the shopping and restaurants are.

Mexico is a very very large country. That said the Fives in playa del Carmen is great. Secrets in Puerto Vallarta is amazing and Pamilla in Cabo is incredible. In my opinion avoid all Riu's.

Is it typical for all flights to the Riviera Maya for lack of better words...suck? They all leave at night and arrive the next day.....

Where are you flying from? The west coast?

Yes from yvr

Remember there is a time change and it's a 6hr direct flight so on a clock that's actually 9hours... Leave at 10pm get there at 7am for example. I see a westjet day flight leaves at 9:40 arrives at 6:30pm
Something else to consider... It's dark by 8pm all year round in Mexico. So arriving at 7am gives you that much more sunshine!

Check the weather in November for Mexico. We were on the East coast in early December (at Akumal, the Bahia Sian Kaan) and got a lot of rain as it's the tail end of the rainy season. You'll likely have better weather that time of year on the west coast e.g. Puerto Vallarta or Ixtapa.
