Jessica
Cebu is nice. Tourist friendly.
Kevin
Bohol is very nice, not very many tourists as long as you stay away from the Panglao end, but still enough tourist infrastructure to make things relatively easy.
Don
Bohol. Hands down for short trips
Patricia
Siquijor...just left the other day. Nice small island.
Ma

Thanks all!! I will keep all this in mind... unfortunately it looks like we may have to put off a trip to that part of the world as I'm not comfortable going through China right now and that's our options for flights
Aileen
You can go through Japan and Taiwan if you want to avoid China
Lisa
Sherri I just rerouted my trip to Phuket through S Korea. There are definitely ways to get to that part of the world

We just did the main island of Luzon—the northern part has it all! Check out hanging coffins in Segada, then head up to Banaue to hike into the rice paddies, over to the coast, but sure to catch historic town of Vigan, then to the northern beach resort of Pagupud which is so beautiful and quiet during the week! Bus ride back to Manila. 2wks is a good time

JesseJames Farrugia loved banaue and definitely would want to include a visit there! Thanks for this!!

Exploring the Philippines with a 15-Year-Old: Backpacking Adventures and Cultural Immersion
Are you planning a family vacation to the Philippines with your 15-year-old son? If so, you're in for an unforgettable experience! The Philippines is a breathtaking archipelago that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and outdoor adventures. With 10-12 days in hand, you can embark on a journey that will expose your son to the wonders of gentle backpacking and immerse him in the diverse cultures of this vibrant nation.
The Island of Palawan: A Backpacker's Paradise
For an unforgettable backpacking experience, I highly recommend exploring the island of Palawan. This island is renowned for its stunning landscapes, pristine beaches, and abundant wildlife. Start your journey in Puerto Princesa, where you can visit the incredible Underground River, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From there, hop on a boat and head to El Nido, a breathtaking destination known for its towering limestone cliffs, hidden lagoons, and crystal-clear waters.
While in El Nido, consider embarking on a multi-day island-hopping adventure. This will allow you and your son to experience the thrill of camping on secluded beaches, snorkeling in vibrant coral reefs, and hiking through lush forests. The experience of carrying your gear, cooking over a campfire, and falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves will undoubtedly create lasting memories.
Banaue Rice Terraces: A Cultural Marvel
If you have the time, I highly recommend extending your trip to include a visit to the Banaue Rice Terraces in northern Luzon. This ancient wonder, carved into the mountainsides by the ancestors of the Ifugao people, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of Philippine culture.
While in Banaue, you and your son can embark on guided hikes through the terraces, interact with the local Ifugao communities, and learn about their traditions and way of life. Additionally, you can explore nearby villages, witness traditional weaving and wood carving, and even participate in rice planting or harvesting activities, depending on the season.
Cultural Immersion in Manila
Before or after your island adventures, consider spending a day or two in Manila, the bustling capital of the Philippines. Here, you can delve into the rich history and diverse cultures of the country by visiting museums, heritage sites, and bustling markets.
Some must-visit attractions in Manila include the walled city of Intramuros, where you can explore centuries-old fortifications and churches; the National Museum of the Philippines, which houses an impressive collection of art and artifacts; and the vibrant Divisoria Market, where you can experience the sights, sounds, and flavors of Philippine street life.
By combining the natural wonders of Palawan, the cultural richness of Banaue, and the urban exploration of Manila, you and your 15-year-old son will embark on an adventure that will broaden your horizons, challenge your physical abilities, and create lasting memories of the Philippines' diverse landscapes and cultures.

Suggestions for best island(s) , experiences in Phillipines with 15 year old son. Ideally would like to expose to gentle backpacking experience, with as much culture as possible...in other words not just beach time! 10-12 days.... not sure of its reasonable to get up to Banaue for a couple days before island (not Boracay)...
