Has anyone done a tour of Japan that they would recommend? We are thinking of 10-12 days in late August.

I went on my own without a tour. It is quite easy to do. a few days in Tokyo, mt. Fuji, then Kyoto, Hiroshima and Nara.

10 days wouldn't be enough to cover just Tokyo. But, If had to give other recommendations on where to visit in Japan i'd say Kyoto or Osaka.

I would do your own thing - much more affordable and flexible. I would say go to Kyoto for 4 days and the rest in Tokyo - you will want the extra time! check out the JR Pass to enable you to use bullet trains and local JR trains for an unlimited amount of travel for a set amount of days.

You MUST go to Nara. Amazing buddha there, plus the deer in the park are a must see.

Princess Cruises does one around Japan. 5* service, all organized and safe if you're nervous about travelling around on your own, and reasonably priced, usually about $100-150/day + air

Recommended Japan Tour in Late August

If you are planning a 10-12 day tour of Japan in late August, there are several options that come highly recommended by travelers who have experienced the beauty and culture of this fascinating country. Here are a few suggestions:

1. Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka

A popular itinerary for first-time visitors to Japan is to explore the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, the historic city of Kyoto, and the vibrant city of Osaka. In Tokyo, you can visit iconic landmarks such as the Tokyo Tower, Shibuya Crossing, and the Meiji Shrine. In Kyoto, you can immerse yourself in traditional Japanese culture by visiting temples, shrines, and the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. In Osaka, don't miss the bustling Dotonbori district and the historic Osaka Castle.

2. Hokkaido and Tohoku Region

If you prefer a more off-the-beaten-path experience, consider exploring the northern regions of Hokkaido and Tohoku. In Hokkaido, you can enjoy stunning natural landscapes, delicious seafood, and hot springs in places like Sapporo, Otaru, and Hakodate. In the Tohoku region, you can visit historic samurai towns like Aizu-Wakamatsu, scenic spots like Matsushima Bay, and the vibrant city of Sendai.

3. Hiroshima and Miyajima Island

For a poignant and historical experience, consider visiting Hiroshima and the nearby Miyajima Island. In Hiroshima, you can learn about the tragic events of World War II at the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. Then, take a short ferry ride to Miyajima Island to see the iconic floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine and hike to the top of Mount Misen for breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea.

Overall, Japan offers a diverse range of experiences for travelers, whether you're interested in modern cities, traditional culture, or natural beauty. Just be prepared for the heat and humidity of late August, and make sure to stay hydrated and wear sunscreen!
