How can a family of five easily navigate around Greece during their 17-day trip?

Family of five heading to Greece at the end of April for 17 days. Can anyone make recommendations on airlines, must see, and how to get around?
Thanks

Lindsay I would fly to Crete because taking a ferry all the way down there won’t be ideal! If ryanair or easy jet has flights that will be ideal, but know that their luggage allowance will be very small. In Athens, be ready to do lots of walking and exploring! Athens is full of amazing historical adventures, but it doesn’t have an incredible beach or anything. The city itself is definitely not as beautiful as other parts of Greece. If you want beauty, antipaxos beach near Corfu was incredible. Ithaca was amazing too. Santorini is lovely but it’s quite a romantic destination; I’m not sure how much kids would enjoy it. You can do some cool sailing excursions to other islands, hike a nearby volcano, and swim in hot springs

Definitely go to Naxos.
We used uber in Athens. It was much cheaper than taxis and was real easy. Everyone very friends in Greece. No language problem. Even menus were in english

If you are outdoors at all go to Meteora to hike (or tour). We went rock climbing while there and loved it. I’ve been through Greece multiple times and I didn’t care for Athens - it’s a landing point only for us. We did love Thessaloniki which is a university city. I agree with ryanair or easyjet for getting around. The trains and ferries can eat up a lot of your vacation. Thira (santorini) is beautiful but made for couples- not families. Crete is the opposite- ready to party not romance.

Greece Travel Recommendations for a Family of Five

Airlines

  • Aegean Airlines
  • Olympic Air
  • Ryanair
  • EasyJet

Must See

  • Athens: The Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Ancient Agora, the National Archaeological Museum
  • Santorini: The whitewashed villages of Oia and Fira, the caldera, the Red Beach
  • Mykonos: The windmills, the Little Venice, the beaches of Paradise and Elia
  • Rhodes: The Old Town, the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes, the Archaeological Museum
  • Crete: The Palace of Knossos, the Samaria Gorge, the Elafonisi Beach

Getting Around

  • Public transportation: Buses, trains, and ferries are all available in Greece. They are a relatively inexpensive way to travel, but they can be crowded and slow.
  • Rental car: Renting a car is a great way to see Greece at your own pace. However, it can be expensive, and parking can be difficult in some areas.
  • Private tours: Private tours can be a great way to see Greece without the hassle of planning and driving. However, they can be expensive.
