Can anybody give me some advice we are wanting to go to Disneyland in Tokyo in October with our 2 children 3 and 11 from Vancouver. We have never traveled overseas before what all do we need to know should we book flight and hotel together or is it better to book sperate? Book a head like now or wait till closer thank you in advance

Hi Sara. I can't remember if you need a travel visa. I don't think Canadians do. Hotels are expensive in Tokyo. I would suggest booking a small house. We got a three bedroom last year through airbnb for $165 CND a night. Disneyland and Disney Sea are separate amusement parks but located side by side. And they are busy like all Disney parks so I'd say go during the weekday rather than a weekend if you can. Hotels at Disney are expensive as well but could be fun. I think it was around $60-$70 for a day admission. Can probably get a two or three day pass that would make it cheaper.
Trains can get pretty packed and that might freak out the 3 year old. People are friendly and it's a very safe place. Many people speak/understand English if you speak slowly. Enjoy!

Thank you for this info i will for sure check out airbnb. We thought about staying in Disney but then figure we wouldn't explore enough of the surrounding area. Do you know any other must do things in japan that we would not want to miss ?

Disney is in Chiba prefecture. And a good hour from the other side of Tokyo. So depending on how long you plan to stay, you may want to spend a few days near Disney and sometime elsewhere because train travel is expensive and time consuming for some destinations. Narita Airport is also in Chiba prefecture. I'd probably do the Disney stuff at the end of my stay when the kids and you have adjusted to the jet lag and can enjoy Disney more instead of a tired and possibly cranky experience. I'd also suggest going to shibuya shopping district; Hachiko exit from the train. It's like Times Square NY but more people. Harajuku is cool too. You should also try to get up a tower or Tokyo Dome Hotel has a bar on the 33rd floor that has a great view of the city and so does the government building in Shinjuku.

would renting a car be out of the question?

Car rental is costly because there are a lot of toll highways and some parts of the city are cramped. And tons of traffic. It is very confusing as well and they drive on the other side of the road. Don't drive at all.
Trains/subways are easy enough. You can get day passes for the trains but only for that company. Eg. JR train pass or a metro pass for subway.

Im sure once you are they it is a lot easier to plan things and make them work so hard when you have never been somewhere and trying to plan from so far away lol

Meiji Jingu shrine is near harajuku and Yoyogi park. Asakuasa and Nakamese street is interesting.

Go to an izakaya to eat dinner. Like a pub/restaurant. Lots of small plates to eat and try new stuff.

The emperors palace is in the center of Tokyo not far from the train station. Some of these stations are huge and packed with people so take your time to find your way and don't rush to jump on a train cuz it's usually the wrong one. The trains do stop late at night though. Last train is usually around midnight.
