Travelling to Antigua in January. We have 12 hour overnight layover in Newark. Can we exit terminal to catch some sleep at nearby motel and re-enter in the morning without any issues?

Overnight Layover in Newark: Can You Leave the Airport?

Planning a trip to Antigua in January and have a 12-hour overnight layover in Newark? You might be wondering if it's possible to leave the airport and catch some sleep at a nearby hotel before continuing your journey the next morning. The short answer is yes, you can exit the terminal and re-enter without any significant issues, but there are a few things to keep in mind.

Clearing Customs and Immigration

The most crucial aspect of leaving the airport during a layover is that you will need to clear customs and immigration again when you re-enter the United States. This means you'll have to go through the standard entry procedures, including presenting your passport, answering questions from border officials, and potentially having your luggage screened.

It's essential to allow sufficient time for this process, as queues at immigration can be lengthy, especially during peak travel periods. Twelve hours should provide ample time to exit the airport, get some rest, and return with plenty of time to spare before your next flight.

Finding Accommodation Near Newark Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) is conveniently located near several hotels, making it easy to find a place to rest during your layover. Some popular options include:

  • Courtyard by Marriott Newark Elizabeth
  • Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel
  • Holiday Inn Newark Airport

Many of these hotels offer shuttle services to and from the airport, making transportation a breeze. Additionally, some hotels may offer discounted "day rates" for travelers looking to catch a few hours of sleep during a long layover.

Logistics and Tips

If you decide to leave the airport during your layover, here are a few tips to ensure a smooth experience:

  • Keep track of your flight information and terminal to avoid getting lost upon your return.
  • Carry a copy of your travel itinerary and confirmation numbers for your hotel reservation.
  • Pack essential items like medication, travel documents, and a change of clothes in your carry-on luggage.
  • Allow plenty of time for travel to and from the hotel, immigration clearance, and security screening upon re-entry.

While a 12-hour layover might seem like a long time, it's often better to take advantage of the opportunity to rest and refresh before continuing your journey. With proper planning and preparation, leaving the airport during your Newark layover can be a convenient and comfortable experience.
