I prefer off season travel. Best rates. Fewer crowds. Comfortable weather though you need to be adept with layers, rainwear, Headwear, and shoes.

Nathan Costco Cloudveil long sleeve merino tshirts, cashmere or merino wool toque and scarf/shawl, MEC synthetic gloves, MEC or Eddie Bauer packable down sweater, Blundstone boots (waterproof, good on cobblestone), merino leggings or tights, Darn Tough merino Sox, breathable packable rain/wind coat over the hips. I use carryon and an "ancient" MEC commuter bag.

We were in Italy in early November. It was a bit rainy in Venice, but still nice weather overall. We were in Croatia in May and it was perfect. It is early in the season, though, so there were fewer ferry crossings to the islands than there would be a later. Temperatures were great and it wasn’t crowded.

Was in Greece last November and most businesses were closed. It was nice because there were no crowds and the weather was still relatively warm but if you’re looking for restaurants, nightlife, beach clubs etc. this is certainly not the time to go. If you like quiet and self exploration then it’s great and id recommend.

We did Croatia in late March/early April one year and Greece another year during that time frame. Weather was pleasant, crowds were sparser, prices fine. Issue was that in smaller towns, many restaurants were closed and there were fewer options for transit within the country. Other than that, it was a blast!

We took an overnight ferry from Split to Parma, Italy on our way to the Almalfi Coast. Rented a vehicle in Split to drive to Bosnia, Montenegro & Dubrovnik for a 2 day trip. Stayed in Split for 3 weeks.

I was in southern Italy, Croatia and Montenegro in October and November. Spectacular weather, no crowds, prices are better. Highly recommend! Evenings I needed a light sweater or jacket, daytime was shorts weather and I still swam lots.

Nathan rent a vehicle in Croatia, it’s cheap, easy to drive and there’s lots of great stops between Dubrovnik and Split.
Southern Italy is fantastic then! Amalfi is quiet, no lines for ferries. I drove the road and it was doable because it wasn’t packed, super neat experience. Lecce, albuferia, Bari we’re all really quiet so you can actually explore the ruins and historical areas.

Northern italy will be cold and rainy. Christmas time may be expensive. If you are not interested in spending time by the beach then it could be a good time for visiting art sites and museums. I would pick March/April. It could be nicer

Our Florence airbnb host this May said that off season is the best as well. I don't think you can go wrong with that combo during that time period.

I have lots of opinions about Italy. Did not enjoy Venice, loved Florence and didn't have enough time in Rome.
Honestly, though not mentioned in your post - the best part of our trip (we did 12 countries over 92 days) was Slovenia. It was incredible!

Lori My family is from Ljubljana and Postojna and Slovenia is one of the best kept secrets in Europe. Even my friends in other parts of Europe don’t think of it. And then they visit Lake Bled…

It was breathtaking and I didn't expect it. The people were lovely, the scenery incredible and it was so much less expensive than most of our other parts of our trip. We'll definitely return!

Depends on areas/islands you plan to visit. Some businesses on some Greek Islands are closed during those months. Some google searches may be helpful in getting this information

Nathan I would suggest choosing locations you'd like to visit and google what is open during the those times. I would suggest that if you can go shoulder seasons (May/June/September/October) you would likely have nice temperatures, less crowds, more accommodation choices and enjoy all the highlights.

Italy/Croatia/Greece in the off-season

Visiting Italy, Croatia, and Greece in the off-season, specifically during the months of November, December, and January, can be a unique and rewarding experience. While these countries are popular tourist destinations during the summer months, exploring them in the winter can offer a different perspective and a chance to see these beautiful countries in a new light.

Personal Experiences

Many travelers have visited Italy, Croatia, and Greece during the off-season and have had positive experiences. The crowds are much smaller, making it easier to explore popular attractions without the usual hustle and bustle. The weather may be cooler, but it can also be quite pleasant for sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Recommendations

While the off-season may not be ideal for beach vacations, it can be a great time to visit cultural sites, historic landmarks, and local markets. In Italy, you can explore cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice without the summer crowds. In Croatia, you can visit Dubrovnik, Split, and Plitvice Lakes National Park without the long lines. And in Greece, you can discover the ancient ruins of Athens, the picturesque islands of Santorini and Mykonos, and the charming villages of the Peloponnese peninsula.

Overall, visiting Italy, Croatia, and Greece in the off-season can be a wonderful experience for those looking to avoid the crowds and experience these countries in a more authentic way. Just be sure to pack accordingly for the cooler weather and check for any seasonal closures of attractions or accommodations.

Would I Recommend?

As someone who has visited Italy, Croatia, and Greece during the off-season, I would definitely recommend it to others. The quieter atmosphere, lower prices, and unique experiences make it a worthwhile trip. Just be prepared for cooler weather and shorter daylight hours, but also be open to the possibility of discovering hidden gems and enjoying a more relaxed travel experience.

So, if you're considering a trip to Italy, Croatia, or Greece in the off-season, go for it! You may just find that it's the perfect time to explore these beautiful countries without the usual crowds.

Thanks in advance for considering this travel advice!
