Looking for a Tropical Getaway? Where Should We Go Besides Mexico?

Question:

Profile picture of Lauren

Lauren

Hey everyone!
My husband and I need to book a trip through westjet sometime this year to use our $1200 credit while it's still valid. The easiest vacation would be Mexico but we've been to Mexico so many times that I'm looking for something different!
Do you have any suggestions for a beach/tropical vacation between October-December? We love to swim, lounge by the beach, and go on lots of adventures (i.e. snorkel, zipline, ATV, hike, etc.) Bonus points if you can suggest AirBnBs, hotels, hostels, all-inclusives, etc.
Thanks so much!

I haven't read all the many comments, but if it hasn't been said before - westjet is allowing free cancellation right now and it resets the expiry of the travel credit. So book some flights and cancel them right away and you will have more time (in case you don't feel you have enough time right now).

Profile picture of Heather

Heather

Catherin err, not true, they go back into the bank and keep the same date. What you can do is mark on your calendar a month before they expire and see if you want to book, but if not call and pay a small fee to get them extended one more year.

Profile picture of Catherin

Catherin

Found ok prices for Aruba in November with westjet - one of the sunniest spots in the Caribbean that time of year. Mariana I believe we rented from Alamo. They have the big car rentals and I would stick with that. There are so many hills and sketchy road cliffs that an automatic is seriously needed! We met a couple that rented from another car rental company. They were given a standard without knowing how to properly drive and they blew the clutch out and were stranded for two days at a hotel. We had fantastic service with Alamo!

Tropical Vacation Ideas (Beyond Mexico!)

Trading in your usual Mexican getaway for something new is an excellent idea! October-December offers fantastic weather in several tropical destinations. Here are a few suggestions catering to your adventurous spirits and love for beach relaxation:

Costa Rica

Costa Rica Beach

Costa Rica is a nature lover's paradise. Think lush rainforests, stunning beaches, and incredible wildlife. You can easily combine relaxation with activities like ziplining, white-water rafting, and surfing.

Accommodation Ideas:

  • The Peace Lodge (Luxury): Five-star experience nestled in La Paz Waterfall Gardens.
  • AirBnBs in Tamarindo (Mid-range): Plenty of options for beachside rentals.
  • Adventure Inn Hotel outside La Fortuna (Budget-friendly): Great access to Arenal Volcano and hot springs.

Belize

Belize Barrier Reef

Belize offers the world's second-largest barrier reef, making it perfect for snorkeling and diving. Explore ancient Mayan ruins, go cave tubing, or simply relax on the beautiful beaches of Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker.

Accommodation Ideas:

  • Matachica Resort & Spa (Luxury): Overwater bungalows and beachfront villas on Ambergris Caye.
  • Weezie's Oceanfront Hotel (Mid-range): Boutique hotel with great amenities on Caye Caulker.
  • Bella Sombra Guest House (Budget-friendly): Comfortable and clean guesthouse in San Ignacio, close to inland adventures.

Dominican Republic

Dominican Republic Beach

Known for its all-inclusive resorts, the Dominican Republic offers fantastic value. Beyond the resorts, you can explore the Samaná Peninsula for whale watching, hike to waterfalls in Jarabacoa, or explore the historic streets of Santo Domingo.

Accommodation Ideas:

  • Zoëtry Agua Punta Cana (Luxury): Boutique all-inclusive with gourmet dining and a serene atmosphere.
  • Iberostar Selection Bávaro Suites (Mid-range): Large all-inclusive with plenty of activities.
  • Guesthouse Casa Jum (Budget-friendly): Located in Cabarete, great for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

Tips for Booking:

  • Check WestJet's website for direct flights and package deals.
  • Consider travel insurance for peace of mind.
  • Book accommodations and tours in advance, especially if traveling during peak season.
  • Pack light clothing, swimwear, sunscreen, and insect repellent.

Enjoy your trip planning, and have a wonderful vacation!
