Lori Underwood
We used WALKS OF ITALY for small group walking tours. In Florence we were the only 2 booked and the tour was not canceled. The owner is a Canadian man who travelled to Italy, married and Italian and never left. I highly recommend them...they have walking tours all over Italy.

We typically stay at Hotel Napolean, near the train station and metro. Always a great stay and very convenient.

We stayed at Hotel Nerva, next to the Forum. Great breakfast. Decent rooms. Family run and very helpful. Price was very decent, but I think prices have risen dramatically with post Covid travel.

We had a great tour of the Vatican, with Sistine Chapel, through Angel Tours. And we loved the Villa Borghese gallery and park. Need to book a time slot for the gallery. Amazing Bernini sculptures, without crowds.

Not sure when in September you are going but the Ryder Cup at Marco Simone has definitely driven hotel prices way up. We typically get reasonable rates but I’ve seen rooms that are triple their typical rate and much less availability. Good luck to you!

I just got back from Rome and stayed at FH55 Grand Hotel Palatino it is just a few blocks from Coliseum and Palatine Hill. And just down the street from Cavor Metro. Great breakfast and easy walking to almost everything of it isn't hot out. Booked the Vatican tour and were in the museum by 8am. Also did Coliseum tour the tour guide wasn't very good and sorry I don't remember the company.

Judy how was the hotel in terms of prices? I’m trying to determine what’s reasonable and what’s too much.

Ania I got it on hotel.ca when I booked it last October I paid 235 per night. But prices have gone up I think. That was for a superior room. When looking at hotel rooms in Europe check out the room sizes as some are quite small mine was 21 Sq meter. So decent size not big like most American hotels.

Look for vrbos in Trastervere. Great area and super walkable to everything. Also LOVED our tour with https://www.guidesinrome.com/ Marina Juliette Vandenberg was incredible!

I second staying in Trastervere or across the river. I stayed at Madonna de Monti suites last October…it was a great price and very walkable (though it was my 3rd trip to Rome so I wasn’t hitting major sites this time).
I always book a Guru free walking tour when I hit a new city. They list what stops there are, so you can choose what works best for you. At the end, you tip what you want, usually $10-20. I find they are typically better then paid tours, have better info and better routes. Enjoy!

We stayed near the train station at Hotel Valentino Palace. It DID NOT look anything like the pictures at all. It was very small and dingy. I guess I'm saying I wouldn't recommend lol

Hotel Barrette Pension. Great, cute hotel. Amazing staff. They have a mini fridge in each room stocked with food for you and it has AC. Very affordable and extremely central. For tours, do a guided tour of the coliseum with the gladiator floor (we booked through viator) and timed entry for St Peter’s in Vatican City. The rest you can do on your own, it’s a easy city to get around by foot (I used GPS My City to plan) https://www.hotelbarrett.it/en/

Google up viator.com
We use them almost exclusively.
Great site for excursions.
As for Rome specific, I'd strongly recommend front of the line tours for the coliseum and Vatican city.
Line ups are exceptional and there's only 168 hours in a week.. how many of those do you want to spend in lineups?
The guided tours also are extremely beneficial in educating you on what you are looking at.
As for accommodation, safe, central and clean.
No point saving a few bucks staying out of the action only to spend on Ubers and transit and if you've never been to Italy, driving is a while other world..I don't know if the Italians are the very best drivers in the world or the worst.. could be both.
Again, going back to the 168hrs thing, how many hours do you want to spend just getting too where you want to be and getting back to the hotel?
If ask goes well, you'll be leaving the hotel first thing in the morning and getting back dead tired in the evening.
Don't spend a fortune on the hotel.
It's not a sun/sand vacation.
That's my two bits.
.. oh, and don't expect great Italian food..I got the feeling that when you go to a fine Italian restaurant in North America or wherever, you don't order the pizza and spaghetti but they are proudly displayed on just about every central Roman restaurant.
Whether they make great food or barely average food, they know you won't be back and there's a line up out the door every night so there isn't much incentive for them to up their game.
In fact,
If go so far as to say that the worst Italian food I've ever had was in Rome.
The cappuccinos are poured straight from heaven and the caprese salads are delightful but anything with meat in it we found quite disappointing.

https://ca.simcorner.com/products/europe-uk-sim-card-12gb
I have used a physical SIM card from this company a number of times. It has worked flawlessly, ready to go upon landing. Works throughout EU, unlimited texts and calling to EU and UK for 30 days. The sims I investigated only offered data but I find having a phone number is convenient. This was also less $ than E sims.
I sound like a commercial but I am just a satisfied customer.
