I love Celebrity. Beautiful ships, great food and now beverage packages, gratuities and wifi are included. We are leaving this Sunday on Celebrity Eclipse out of Vancouver, round trip

Profile picture of Tracey

Tracey

Look for a round trip sailing, otherwise you have to fly back from somewhere in Alaska. We have a round trip booked June 19th on Celebrity

Profile picture of Samira

Samira

Tracey Oh perfect! Is 7 days enough? There are so many packages and it’s confusing me again. Can you please share your itinerary via DM?

Profile picture of Judy

Judy

Samira It’s “enough” but if you can, try a back-to-back. We are leaving Monday from Vancouver to Seward and return to YVR from there.

Profile picture of Tracey

Tracey

Samira sent you a dm. This is my first trip to Alaska so I'm not sure that 7 days is long enough, but I do know that it can get a bit tiresome on the cruise after the 5th day of eating multiple times a day

Profile picture of Jenn

Jenn

7 days is enough! When I went we did the Hubbard glacier cruise which had stops in Juneau Ketchikan and icy strait and a sailing day to the glacier!

Profile picture of Samira

Jenn thank you! That gives me a head start!

We've done Holland America twice and loved it! Make sure whatever ship you choose that it goes into Glacier Bay. That's a must see!

Profile picture of Danielle

Corrie absolutely agree with Glacier Bay being a must-see!

Profile picture of Amee

Amee

Corrie , which ship? We are going July 6 with Zuiderdam. My first time with Holland America.

Profile picture of Corrie

Corrie

Amee zuiderdam was our first ship and we loved it! We went on the volendam for the 2nd cruise and it was a bit smaller boat but still loved it.

Profile picture of Amee

Amee

Thanks Corrie. We usually cruise with Princess but they don't have a Vancouver return in July.

We cruised North to Anchorage on Princess but their ships do not have the Azipod which is a kind of side thruster that allows more ship maneuverability. They canceled our stop in Juneau due to rough water even though other cruise lines were able to dock there that day.
We booked our own train from Anchorage stopping over night at Talkeetna. That is the tiny town which inspired TV series "Northern Exposure". We stayed at the "Roadhouse" famous for good luck for teams climbing the Denali Mountain. Famous cinnamon buns!
The Roadhouse people picked us up and returned us to the train station.
Next am we had arrange the train up to Fairbanks and joined the Holland America land sea tour. All your hotels trains and buses are arranged for you starting at Fairbanks.
It includes an amazing stop at Denali where you can do a tour deep into the park view the snow capped mountain and see grizley bears.
Part of the return trip was train part was bus. They deliver right onto your new ship to return to Vancouver. It was cheaper than doing it on our own.
Overall taking 2 different cruise lines worked out well. It gave us different menus and entertainment plus a visit to Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau on the way home. Spring for the balcony as the views are fabulous and you have your own fresh air if there is an outbreak of any kind.

Samira Sept is tail end of the season so expect to be colder/wetter/foggier but much quieter. Us Vancouverites are a hearty bunch lol

Profile picture of Jeanne

Jeanne

Samira if you are a Costco member, check prices on there too. We have found cruises cheaper by $100s rather than booking direct

Profile picture of Lynn

If you can afford it try and get a balcony! We did a cruise to Alaska and it was our first with a balcony! Enjoy!

Profile picture of Heather

The longer in the season you go, the daylight hours are diminished. I preferMay June. Less chance of fog and it is light until 10:30 at least at night. Holland or Princess. The ships have just started doing round trips out of Vancouver once again. They are only half full at this point.

Profile picture of Samira

Samira

Heather that’s a pointer! Will keep in mind!!

Profile picture of Judy

We are leaving Monday on a back-to-back on Norwegian Jewel. We live downtown Vancouver so we’ll walk to the port. It will be our sixth trip there. Much prefer NCL to Holland America. Their ships seem tired and the passengers are generally senior citizens.

Profile picture of Lyn

Lyn

Judy love NCL, my friends and I did a round trip from Vancouver in May 2015 (I live here, they flew in from Toronto). It was fabulous!

Profile picture of Margo

Have done this cruise twice, and the one where you fly to anchoarge and cruise back to vancouver. Depending on what you like , depends on the cruise line. I really liked the Celebrity Cruise we did, it was very nice. I also cruise Royal Caribbean a fair bit and really like the entertainment they offer. When we sailed with Celebrity they had BC resident rates that were a very good deal, I know some cruise line will offer those. Be sure to check before booking . Have a great trip

Profile picture of San

I’ve been on several cruise lines and it really depends on your personal preference. Disney cruise lines are the most fun even for adults. I personally prefer Princess for their self laundry but it doesn’t matter much for a week long trip. Some people choose their cruises according to budget. Remember to factor in the ship when doing so, it’s not the the cruise line you need to look into, the ship itself is more important. The age and capacity of the ship is a huge factor for some people.

Profile picture of Maria

Have done Holland America a handful of times- older crowd. Disney Wonder was awesome but no casino on board. Celebrity was fun. Mixed ages and lively compared to Holland America. All have great cuisine at all restaurants and impeccable service all around. We don’t stick to one line. Whichever happens to be on sale is the way we go.

Profile picture of Cheryl

Cheryl

I’ve been to Alaska 5 times with Princess. Round trip from Vancouver is definitely the itinerary I like the most, I have it booked for 2023. Do not miss the White Pass train round trip from Skagway for the history. It travels the route of the miners to the Yukon and is fabulous! I can’t believe what these men went through to get to the Yukon Gold Rush! Glacier Bay is a must see on your trip as well. It’s awe inspiring. Obvious I’m hooked on Alaska and I firmly believe a round trip from Vancouver to Alaska on Princess is one of the best cruises you can take, especially for newer cruisers. May and June are best and for sure, book a balcony to take advantage of Glacier Bay. Weather on these cruises is always unpredictable. I’ve had wonderful warm days in May and also rainy ones.

Profile picture of Judy

Judy

Cheryl the train isn’t running this year as it crosses the border and with the arrivecan app required etc, they’re not doing it.

Profile picture of Cheryl

Cheryl

Judy The summit excursion is back in service for 2022. This is from the White Pass website “The White Pass Summit Excursion will resume for the 2022 operating season.” In fact we have never even had to take a passport. It’s not required for this trip since the train does not stop or let any passengers off on the US (edit…should say Canadian)side of the border. There are other trains that travel further and may not be available but the summit round trip from Skagway is available. Since a passport isn’t needed I don’t think ArriveCAN is required for this particular excursion. Princess acquired this railway a few years ago and are offering this excursion for 2022.

Profile picture of Judy

Judy

I’m on a NCL FB page and many on there say their excursions have been cancelled so they’re scrambling to get private tours. Maybe it’s changed in the last couple of weeks.

Profile picture of Sharon

Sharon

Judy we just got back from an Alaskan cruise today and the train is back up and running as we were on it. I think the issue is the excursions where you take the train one way and a bus the other way. That trip isn't being offered this year I believe because of the border issues.

Call a travel agent. Not only will they make sure you are on the right ship for your personality but will advise you of promotions. They will be a wealth of information for you. Talk to an expert. Often larger companies have “group” rates that are not available to the public. Example expedia Cruises.

They are all good. It depends on your budget and your interests. They all seem to always have sales on. We have only traveled to Alaska twice and they were on Celebrity. We have cruised to other places with Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, Holland, and Princess.

Profile picture of Barbara

Barbara

We like to cruise Princess because they have sliding balcony doors rather than doors that open out. We like this because it gives more room to move around on the balcony without moving furniture around to accommodate doors. Also for Alaska, I might recommend a balcony that has a ceiling just in case it rains or weather isn’t great. We stayed in D711 on Coral and it was perfect !!!

My suggestion is either Celebrity or Holland America. But, as others have posted, HA tends to be a little on the older side. The reason I suggest them is on my cruise with HA they had a park ranger come on board as we were cruising through Glacier Bay National Park and spoke about the area for several hours. It was like a live version of National Geographic. If you like that kind of thing. I would also note that in September, the weather can change greatly and coming around the tip of Vancouver Island can be rough water. My September Alaska cruise caused a couple of days to have a ship almost to ourselves as most of the people were in their cabins with sea sickness.

Profile picture of Tina

When u go to watch the glacier calving. Go to one of the lower decks. 90% of the boat goes up to the top deck. That way no crowds and you get a private show. Totally worth it imo.

Profile picture of Maureen

Maureen

Holland america is definitely for older folks. Entertainment is low but the food is good. I was bored completely for the social aspect. Old folks tend to go to bed early so bars shut down early or there is precious little to do. And i was even on carnival! I took holland america to the caribbean and really disliked it.

Someone already mentioned Vacations to go and I agree that they are a good resource to use. I would go round trip out of Vancouver. Lots of cheap options now . Never seen Alaska cruises this cheap so a good time to go . You need a negative Covid test within two days of leaving and have to be double vaxed to get on the ship.

Profile picture of Lynne

Lynne

Tim who did you book it with? I am looking for another one this summer. Cheaper to leave my timeshare in the rental pool , take the money it earns, and go on a cruise. I end up ahead with the low rates on ship and the high rates at beach resorts in Canada.

I've been on most and they are all good. That's been in the past 15 years. Things might be different depending on your expectations, but each port and each ship were pretty much good enough to meet my expectation. Choose any ship but PRICE and discount is my personal deal breaker. Who can beat a great price as food, cabin size, and activities don't change that much that those things matter in decision making. That's just me.

Profile picture of Jade

Holland America, Celebrity, Princess are all pretty good. We just pick whichever has a good deal going on. They will all be a little different in entertainment and food, probably Holland and Celebrity has a bit better food than Princess but they have all been pretty fun.
