Seeking Lesser-Known Greek Islands Away from the Club Scene - Any Suggestions?

Question:

Does anyone have any Greek island recommendations? A friend and I are going late September/early October. We have been to Mykonos before and loved it, but 7 years later we are less interested in the club scene. We considered Crete but wonder if because of the large size it may lose the island feel.. Any lesser known islands you like? Dodecanese or Ionian?

Crete is beautiful. My boyfriend and I stayed in Crete and rented a car. Drove along the coasts and stayed 1-3 days in each village. Then picked up and drove again. I really recommend checking out Crete. The beaches are beautiful. And the food is delicious. There's lots of culture in Crete, each village is unique in their own way.

We were in Naxos last October, it was lovely! Spent 12 days in a lovely room with kitchenette and pool area. The island is big enough to explore and not get bored if you're there for more than a few days.

Another vote for Santorini. I have also been to Kythria which is very quiet if are looking for that kind of thing. Definitely would want a car to explore the island with.

Rhodes !! And from Rhodes you can take a bunch of day trips on ferries to different islands like hydra and kos ... and Rhodes has an acropolis and medieval town to see

Santorini is probably the least over run with tourists at this time of year. Crete, Zakinthos and similar will be over run with young Europeans on their end of year/second level education celebrations. I guess like spring break here. Santorini will most likely have honemooners etc.

The island of Hydra. No vehicles on the island, aside from tiny garbage trucks. You get around by donkey!

I went to skopelos a few years ago and LOVED it. It's home to the Mamma Mia movie church, which motivated me to go. But other than that, it is very beautiful and green.

Greek Island Recommendations

My friend and I are planning a trip to the Greek islands in late September/early October. We've been to Mykonos before and loved it, but 7 years later we're less interested in the club scene. We considered Crete but wonder if because of the large size it may lose the island feel. Any lesser-known islands you like? Dodecanese or Ionian?

Dodecanese Islands

  • Rhodes: The largest island in the Dodecanese, Rhodes has a rich history and culture. It's home to the ancient city of Lindos, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rhodes also has beautiful beaches, such as Tsambika Beach and Anthony Quinn Bay.
  • Kos: Another popular island in the Dodecanese, Kos is known for its beautiful beaches and its ancient ruins. The island is also home to the Asklepieion, which was one of the most important healing centers in the ancient world.
  • Kalymnos: A smaller island in the Dodecanese, Kalymnos is a popular destination for rock climbers. The island has a variety of climbing routes for all levels of climbers.

Ionian Islands

  • Corfu: The largest island in the Ionian Islands, Corfu is a beautiful island with a rich history and culture. It's home to the Old Town of Corfu, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Corfu also has beautiful beaches, such as Glyfada Beach and Paleokastritsa Beach.
  • Zakynthos: Another popular island in the Ionian Islands, Zakynthos is known for its beautiful beaches and its stunning cliffs. The island is also home to the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which is home to a variety of marine life.
  • Kefalonia: A smaller island in the Ionian Islands, Kefalonia is a beautiful island with a variety of landscapes. The island has beautiful beaches, such as Myrtos Beach and Xi Beach. Kefalonia is also home to the Mount Ainos National Park, which is home to a variety of plants and animals.

Which island is right for you?

The best island for you will depend on your interests and what you're looking for in a vacation. If you're looking for a party island, then Mykonos is a good choice. If you're looking for a more relaxed island with beautiful beaches and ancient ruins, then Rhodes or Corfu would be a good choice. If you're looking for an island with a variety of activities, such as hiking, biking, and swimming, then Kefalonia or Zakynthos would be a good choice.
