Gail
Tiffany that’s good to hear, going in two weeks. Anything you can share about your trip?
Tina
I’ve lived in the UAE for 5 years, and although incredibly safe I would not recommend it for vacation. Welcome to ask me about anything though .
Jen
Thailand
Dorothy
I was harassed in Chiang Mai when I walked alone on the street, but not when I was with my partner.
Marion
I was groped at the big temple in Bangkok so I wouldn’t say that city is free from harassment, especially if you were a solo female traveler
Jen
I solo travelled throughout Thailand for a month and had no problems. Dress like a local and you'll get left alone most of the time.
Jessica
I had one really uncomfortable experience at a bus depot there (while by myself) but besides that I found it fine (although I was mainly with a boyfriend at the time)

April
Tora-Don there was a travel advisory for Colombia shortly after she got back , but she said every single person she encountered was so nice
April
Ashley Moodie that’s what I meant ! There was an advisory but she said it was awesome and loved it

Honestly? I never experience a lot of harassment and travel a TON. Latin men are always going to cat call, approach etc because being aggressive in this way is part of how they're socialized. I found Jamaica much the same. I am not interested in engaging in these encounters, so I just go about my business and haven't found any serious resistance to doing so. If you don't personalize it it's not personal. Also? Depends on where you are in a country. I find anywhere on the tourist path to be far worse for stereotypical behaviour. The further you get from those places the more grounded people get in my experience. Hope this helps. Have a great trip
Masha
That's pretty much my experience as well. I felt very safe in Turkey and Morocco. You're mostly fending off invitations to buy good in stores or at stalls. I've traveled through Spain and Portugal with no problems. Mostly it's just not feeling obligated to interact more than you want to.
Ali
Totally. It's the Canadian way to let others control the shit out of us in the spirit of being "nice"
Stephani
Iceland! Super safe and an amazing adventure
Kara
This is a great question. And anyone with recommendations on Middle East or Africa for solo female travel?
Leny
stay home !!
Laura
Kara Id recommend anywhere in the UAE and Oman!
Laura
Laura, I just booked a trip to Oman and Turkey and would love any Oman tips.
Laura
Laura definitely do the wadi shab! and see the sinkhole. Nizwa fort. I stayed in Muscat and there’s a cave restaurant there that is pretty cool. I have heard salalah is amazing and would do that next!
Laura
Make sure you bring conservative clothes that cover shoulders & knees (okay to wear hiking shorts etc on the wadi tours) and you’ll have to rent an abaya if you plan to go to the mosque.
we had a great tour guide for the wadi shab tour and I can give you his whatsapp # if you’d like
Pamela
Chile. You might get cat called but people are really nice generally
Carole
Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia
Tora-Don
Costa Rica and Guatemala (I did Guate with my bf but would go back alone in a heartbeat)
Lyndel
Morocco, Colombia, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Borneo.... to name a few.
Colleen
I traveled to Uganda by myself and lived in Gulu for 3 months. Several of my female colleagues also toured and worked around Rwanda, Tanzania and Zanzibar. I’d say do you research and pay attention to travel advisories. There’s some areas to avoid and other areas I felt safe but took precautions.
Helen
I never had any problems travelling solo in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Ireland, or England
Jasmine
Cat calling is typical in Central America for sure. I wouldn't travel to Nicaragua again by myself.... The men were very aggressive. My favorite places were Guatemala and Belize
Jessica
I did Guatemala by myself and got cat called regularly but it was manageable and I never felt unsafe! Beautiful country too
good to know about your experience in Nicaragua
Maddy
I found that Italian and Spanish men were quite inappropriate when I was traveling around as an 19 year old. I could handle it a lot better now, but still, those countries were the two worst I’ve been to in regard to unwanted attention and cat calling, etc.
America, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, France, Czech R, were all great though! I don’t recall anyone yelling at me or harassment while I was there
I’m still in Canada and love it - been here for a month and no men have been inappropriate!
Also Cambodia isn’t great for young white females if you’re by yourself. They also cat call and stare a lot
Linda
The greek islands, Santorini and Mykonos
Jessica
Also adding Japan ...Guatemala was okay for me at 21 but still a bit uncomfortable (I'm really sensitive to cat calling and stares and things though), Thailand was oddly a rough go when I did some solo travel
Rayna
Japan was also my addition
Hedy
Japan was great for me because of accessibility. You can go far in the country on a single ticket on the japan rail.
Jessica
Same with Taiwan!
Hedy
So true! I just went to Taiwan this December. The nice areas like Jiufen and Shifen were harder to get to (buses are available but sparsely). There were three of us so we hired a cab for the day, but I don't think I would have done that if I was by myself.
Jessica
Hedy I went in August and with the exception of some trains seeming like they might sell out, I had no troubles getting transportation last minute! So easy to get around for sure
Amelia
I met a lot of solo female travellers in Vietnam, it feels reasonably safe and tourist friendly.

Anywhere in Europe was fine, France, Italy, Croatia, Portugal, Greece. In Turkey men stared a lot and catcalled. Morocco I didn’t feel so safe at night. Barcelona down the la rumbla area was a bit dodgy. Thailand I felt super safe. Vietnam in Hanoi we had a taxi scammer kind of experience. I think probably every city has its dodgy parts, you just need to be careful.

Hong Kong, Kathmandu, Vienna, London, New York, vancouver
Marie-Fr
Having lived in both Montreal and vancouver, as a choice, hands Montreal feels far safer. I've been harassed in Vancouver and followed and it's easy to end up on the wrong street... Although, overall in the grand scheme of things Vancouver is pretty safe.
Sharon
Marie-Fr I guess it depends on what you mean by safe...... in my experience women are harassed everywhere....
Lilian
Singapore
Jo-Ann
Belize - other than Belize City - the rest of the country is very safe for solo female travellers
Ka

Stephani

Shivvy
I've experienced harassment here but maybe it depends on the area
Kariann
Fiji!
Ashli
Just want to say: It really depends on a person's particular experience. Things can happen, no matter what you do and how many precautions you take. You have to follow your gut and do what feels right, which may change over time and in a particular circumstance. Don't ever feel "uncourageous" just because you feel unsafe in a particular country or location, when others have felt safe. I've been solo traveling and living primarily in Latin America, but also in other parts of the world, for 12 years now. Sometimes I've felt and been safe, and sometimes horrible things have happened. Have a wonderful time, and follow your heart and gut. You'll make lifelong memories that'll change your life.
Lori
Ecuador and Peru but it helps to have some faciluty with spanish
Lupe
Canada, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Bahamas, some areas in Costa Rica...
Carol
Lupe nope
Marie
Costa Rica
Sarah
I felt totally safe in Cuba (Havana). you do get a lot of cat calling, but it's not creepy like it tends to to be in the Vancouver area.
Valeria
Sarah I have to disagree
Anna
I also felt totally safe in Havana. Unfortunately cat calling is part of the culture, but I didn’t find it creepy either.
Valeria
Anna I did go out at night a lot cause I like to dance. Walking back was the scariest experience
Anna
Valeria I’m not trying to discount your experience, I don’t doubt it. I’m just saying I also felt safe, like Sarah. You disagreed with her, and I appear to have had a similar experience as her.
Valeria
I was there in 2013 sooo it was long time ago, might be different or. Perhaps it depends of what part of town
Sarah
Valeria I found Havana scary the first night due to the black outs, but I went dancing solo and walked back to my hotel alone with no issues. I get what you're saying though, everyone has a different comfort level.
Megan

Zoë
Pretty much anywhere in UK/Europe but examples would be England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Spain. Also felt completely safe in Morocco but I made sure to dress and act in accordance with the culture. Fiji was great when on the Yasawa Islands but didn't spend time on the mainland. Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand were also good/without any issues. Did not feel safe in India at all - even when dressed appropriately men were awful (cab drivers wouldn't even acknowledge me, even when I was in their cab! They would hear the location to go to and refuse to acknowledge my existence further than that. Could just be my experience though). Travelling solo is a fantastic experience, be safe, smart, and enjoy!
Gina
Zoë Sane found being alone on the main island in Fiji was sketchy at time
Zoë
Good to know!
Ni
Indonesia, Europe, Jordan, Egypt, Duabi
Laura
BALI or really anywhere in Asia
Christie
Definitely Bali!!
Alejandr
A BIG tip is to dress like the locals. My girlfriend and I were in India many years ago and we were harassed constantly (me for money) and her (for being blonde) I almost got into a few fights over it, it was that bad.
Anyway, as soon as we started dressing like the locals 90% of the harassment stopped.
Donna
Depends on your age, your hair colour and anything you do to draw attention to yourself - like sexy clothes, jewellery and high heels. Travelling at 50, 60 and 70 is a very different experience from travelling at 20, 30 and 40.

I think a lot would depend upon one's age- I travelled a lot when I was younger and felt uncomfortable in a few places on public transport (Japan, Barbados). However, as a woman in my 30s, I lived in Israel, and also spent time in Thailand and never had any issues. My sister also had trouble-free trips recently to Peru and Iceland. I've had female friends who had very difficult experiences in Egypt and Morocco, even with male companions.
Naomi
I travel solo and have done so for about 50 years. I am now 83 and still travel solo. No problems ever in Europe and the U.K., Mexico, Hawaii, I never wear good jewellery and try to fit in with the local I make sure I am in well lit areas s well as populated areas after dark.
Kevi
I'm 54 and hope to be still traveling when I'm 83...way to go
Ashley
Thailand, many European countries, NYC.
Norma
I've travelled solo for the last 50 years. I've never had a problem throughout Spain, Portugal, Poland, Ireland. I am stopped a lot by police in Mexico but i have never felt threatened by them even when they're asking for money and I'm saying no.
I do pay attention to where i am. If i don't feel completely safe in a place i leave....this has happened a couple of times in Mexico where i didn't like the feel of the town.....trust your intuition and you'll be fine.
Candace
England, Ireland, Scotland, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, Belgium.
Definitely not Greece, not Russia, and not Italy if you don’t want any attention (the men are flirty, but not in a vulgar way). If you’re okay with flirty, then Italy is safe.
Bev
Cuba, and northern European countries.
Lora
Spain, Morocco , Greece Croatia
Suzan
I've also been travelling for 50 years, started young
Over the last few decades, based in Korea, I've ventured much of SE Asia solo or with female companions. No problems what's so ever. Have your eyes and mind and heart open, smile and engage, all can relate to this. Dress local, be local, avoid the notion you are an outsider.
Latest travels in Eastern Europe, Fez Morocco and Cuba...loved it all!
Enjoy everyone!
Noel
Hong kong and Taiwan
Ragnhild
Norway
Patricia
The only place i have encountered problems was India. The men there have no boundries or respect. No problems in SE Asia. Central America or Mexico and Colombia. South Pacific entirely fine
Jessica
Patricia I travelled through India with a boyfriend and wouldn't have the strength to do it alone
Line
Lots of Muslims
Patricia
Line i dont think it has anything to do with religion..muslim sihk or hindu..it more about keeping women supressed and subservient. They seem to think women intentionally tempt them and its your fault if they cant control their base primal instincts. Bullshit on that ... male superiority and machismo rules there. Next time im bringing a taser
Line
Patricia this part of Islam.. that's why women have to wear a Vail.. dont you know that?
Caroline
Costa rica and taiwan were the friendliest to me!
Erin
Bali
Natasha
My friends mom did this crazy trip by her self at 60! There is a Facebook group for other women doing the trip and you check in thru the group so your family knows your ok. She loved it!
Megan Andrea knows more about it!

In all my travels the only time something happened was at a Muslim night market in Krabi city Thailand ! You just have to be an aware traveler.
Roslin
travelled the southern part of Mexico three years in a row by myself, using busses as transportation. Palenque, San Christobal de las Casas, Puerto Escondido. Never felt unsafe or experienced harrasment.
Brenda
I found Thailand to be fine...no problems whatsoever.
Anita
Singapore and Paris. I thought all the guys in Paris must be gay cuz I got no attention let alone harassment!
Taryn
haha!!! Your comment made me laugh. I've been to France many times, and only ever had positive experiences. I had one older gentleman offer to help me hold something while I was trying to wrestle with putting my wallet back in my bag, while juggling money and a large ice cream cone
I also had municipal workers in Carcasonne give me a ride to the walled city when I asked for directions.
Anita
Taryn I walked past a cafe 3 times trying to turn a head! Very dehumanizing!
Ellena
Anita omg you are hilarious
Jill
Just be careful on the subways in Paris. There's organized crime there and requires a watchful eye not to go into a car with a few men by the door and where it looks like a man may enter just after you. (If it looks like this may happen, switch cars at the last second.)
Julia
Philippines

Taryn
Like Gloria, I've traveled a fair bit (over 30 countries in 5 continents), and for 99% of the time, I traveled alone. I was between the ages of 20 and 30 at the time. The only place where I experienced anything that might remotely be described as "harassment" was Tunisia in 2010, when a random dude saw me taking a photo on the main street and kept saying "hey lady, do you want to get a drink? Where you from?" He eventually left me alone when I ignored him, and everybody else I met in Tunisia was amazing.
That said, I've felt safest in Western and Eastern European countries and South America. I enjoyed Malta (mentioned by Lisa) above. I love England, Wales, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Switzerland. I've had nothing but positive experiences in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay (though the latter tends to be expensive). Argentina was super easy to get around, and I don't speak Spanish. Feel free to PM me if you want to ask any questions. I'm a huge proponent of solo female travel and have spent time studying or working in Italy, Russia, Ukraine and Belgium.
Jessica
Thank you!! I'm considering Eastern Europe...are there any countries in specific you particularly enjoyed?
Taryn
I'll admit that I'm biased because I speak Russian and have lived in Ukraine and Russia. I really love both of those countries, but realize that it's not always the easiest to get around because of the language barrier. I was last in Russia in 2012, and I would say St. Petersburg was the most tourist-friendly. I hear things have improved in Moscow, and have had friends who did European Russia without any issue.
I really like Poland - I was in Krakow and Warsaw, and had a fantastic time. I do not speak Polish at all, and found it really manageable.
Depending on your division between Central and Eastern Europe - I loved Hungary and would love to go back. Budapest was amazing, and when I was there in early 2014, I had an awesome little airbnb studio that felt really safe. I found that most Hungarians (at least in Budapest) didn't expect visitors to speak Hungarian, so it wasn't super difficult to get around. I managed to buy a train ticket to Vienna without issue, and bought stuff in stores, took trains, etc, just fine.
Bratislava, Slovakia was gorgeous, and felt super safe.
Taryn
Sorry, that wasn't very specific
I really like Eastern Europe and it's hard to choose
Taryn
Are you considering anywhere in particular?
The worst harassment I encountered in Eastern Europe was in crossing the border between Ukraine and Poland on a train, when the Polish customs agent asked me why I didn't have any illicit alcohol, cigarettes or drugs on me. He called me boring
Line
I want get on the trans.siberian train next spring..I heard it's very safe for solo women..what do you think on that?
Also, in order to get a visa, we need an "invitation letter"...from who did you get it from?
Taryn
Line yep, it's pretty safe for solo women! I've taken trains all over Russia and only once ever had an experience that I might describe as irritating (an old drunk submarine captain wanted to talk). I find going second class (kupe) is the best balance in terms of comfort/safety. There are four bunks to a compartment, and compartments have doors that usually lock. In first class, there's just two bunks (so you could potentially get stuck with one awful person) and third class (platzkart) is an open wagon of bunks (no privacy, harder to sleep).
Each compartment has a provodnik/provodnitsa (a conductor) who is responsible for tickets and passenger comfort. Any problems, and they'll usually sort it out in my experience.
The usual caveats apply - don't leave valuables hanging around in plain view.
Most other passengers are cool and willing to chat on long distances (and share food!). I've had some really interesting conversations with people.
Regarding the invitation letter - most travel agencies will do you one. Check out WayToRussia- when I was still going back, they were the go-to people for stuff like that.
Line
Taryn thank you very much for all that! I checked with some travel agencies in Canada but they will only do it if you buy with them
Taryn
Line you're welcome! That sucks about the Canadian agencies. I'm trying to think what I did in the past - most of the time, I had a university invite me because I was taking courses first and then traveling. I think I got my tourist invite through one of the companies suggested by Way to Russia.
I used to just send my applications directly to the consulate but now I believe they make you go in person (the consulate that serves BC is back east, so it's not realistic) or you have to pay and submit it through a Visa agency, thereby adding to the cost.
Line
Taryn where are you from?
Taryn
Line I'm from Victoria.
Line
Taryn I'm from Quebec but been in Alberta for 10 years and now starting my 4th year in Vancouver
Taryn
Nice! I lived in Vancouver for several years while doing a degree. You're lung that you've had a chance to live in very different parts of the country.
Jessica
Thank you for all this info! Very helpful! I don't have anywhere specific in mind yet so this is great

Really? 2 wowen just got killed there..
Amit
Morocco is definitely not safe for solo women. I was there last year with my sister. We experienced harrassment every time we were not with rest of the group.
Deborah
i heard that. Sadly, women are killed by violent men in every country.
Deborah
Amit I received a lot of harassment from some shop vendors but it was not gender based, they were just pushy jerks. Most people were great. I'm also in my early 50's, so I tend to be easier to ignore
Adryon
Just went to New Zealand. Can honestly say I enjoyed every single second of it!

The only country I know for sure that I will never go back is Jamaica!!..You want talk about harassment and stalking??
Sharron
1st husband died mysteriously there (Jamaica) - 3rd world country with no proper facilities and apparently cannot send body back home without cremation. Claim no real refrigerators and it takes 3 weeks to a month to get the remains back. No pictures and hand written death certificate. Jamaica, a dangerous place to be. In fact, 5 years after his death our daughter was getting phone calls from Jamaica and they were asking for her dad and said they knew he was there!! Explain the logic of THAT to your kids!!

What about the Emirates? Dubaii? Etc..

Line Dayna?
Dayna
Kevin lol don’t do it....
Line
Dayna why not??
Dayna
Line Well I live here permanently for work. I find the groceries very expensive. If your a party goer, the clubs love ladies and always offer free drinks for ladies all night long. Lots of pool parties and brunches to go to. But for the travel aspect, I would probably choose something else (just my opinion). Also it depends on when you want to go to Dubai. Right now it is winter but as we move into the summer months, it becomes unbearable to be outside. So most people are stuck inside with their air conditioners on full blast
Kevin
So a travel destination only for a few days? Kinda like Vegas? Also extremely hot during the summer.
Line
Dayna I'm not planning on moving there..I don't party and won't be cooking..and of course everybody knows you go there during winter..who would want go there in the summer time! The topic here is about "feeling and being safe traveling as a solo woman traveler" in this part of the world... so this said.. anything useful to say on that?
Line
Kevin that's kind of what I was thinking..stop over 3 days or so..

I find East Asia in general pretty free of harassment. It's not really a part of the culture. At worst, you might have someone stare but I've always felt safe traveling there.
Bear in mind I am an Asian woman so my experiences may be different.
Sweden and London I had no issues with.
Paris was the absolute worst and Spain not much better.

Thailand, Japan, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, UK, Turkey, Spain, Peru, Hong Kong, Brazil, and Ecuador. Stay away from India, Fiji, and Mexico. Lots of flirting and comments in Italy.
Laura
Great list. I would say that Spain is a bit iffy. Lots of crime against women unfortunately. I have lived there so have seen both sides of the country - we love Spain.
Cecilia
I only visited Barcelona and Madrid and was fine but perhaps things have changed since I was last there several years back

Brittany Michelle Blendheim is Croatia very safe? I’m thinking to travel with my daughter.
Jessica
Jenny Graham I'm thinking Croatia by myself too
Brittany
Jenny Graham I have done France, Italy, Greece, Amsterdam, Spain, Croatia and Ireland all by myself.. all safe. But in terms of being approached by men mainly I found those two to be the least aggressive. Don’t be scared, just walk around with confidence and be aware of your surroundings. Nothing to be afraid of!
Jenny
Brittany Michelle Blendheim thank you!’

Most of Europe is ok, but Italy is bad for cat calling, unwanted kissy noises etc

I’ve been to a lot of western Europe and it’s been great - Paris, Spain, Amsterdam, Croatia. Also Cambodia and China.
The worst for me was Morocco, I learned from that to book a tour with G Adventures for both India and Egypt/Jordan, they pair you up with another female if you want to avoid the single supplement
Sheila
I agree. Had no problem in Europe but in Morocco the harassment was a tad overwhelming.....and I wasn't there alone. I knew to go as part of a group there, it didn't matter. I still enjoyed the country but it made going some places uncomfortable.

It’s been said a few times but I took a solo trip to Tokyo a few months back and was blown away with how safe it felt. It’s honestly something to experience, it’s very unlike any major city I have ever been to.

England I never felt nervous. I was fine walking around at midnight just fine in London, it was great. And I was barely 20 too!
Bjauna
Costa Rica and most of Europe... Italy I felt safe, I just ignored the cat calling. And usually I only found it to be a problem in the big cities, not the small towns
Jenny
Bjauna I found Costa Rica very cat call-y too. I had a few sketchy run ins there.
Line
Jenny Graham what do you mean?
Jenny
Line I had a few dangerous experiences there from aggressive men.
Karen
Barcelona is fantastic.
In Mumbai I did not feel safe traveling solo
Danielle
I would definitely not recommend Morocco. I was harassed 3 times in the span of a few hours, all from men who worked for Royal Air Maroc or in the Morocco airport. I was actually touched without my consent and stalked by a male flight attendant on my flight between Barcelona and Morocco. So, yeah, don't recommend.

Tracy
Absolutely everywhere. I travel alone quite often and have never had any issues. Just travel smart.
Oh except Naples...that was unpleasant. Naples is scary for everyone.
Jessica
Tracy I've travelled smart to my knowledge and still have had problems...I just want to limit them! It always wears on me to be constantly cat called and some places have a lot more of that!
Tracy
Jessica I get cat called travelling in North America more than ANY other country that I've traveled to. I wouldnt recommend Saudi Arabia however
Jessica
Same, Vancouver was so bad for me
Line
Tracy Naples? Italy? Florida?
Tracy
Line The Naples most people think about when you hear the name Naples, so yes, Italy. I'm not sure anyone outside of the southern states knows Naples, Florida exists

Safe Places for Solo Female Travelers
As a solo female traveler, safety and freedom from harassment are top priorities. While every destination has its own unique challenges, there are certain places around the world that have gained a reputation for being particularly welcoming and secure for women exploring on their own. Here are some recommendations based on personal experiences and feedback from fellow solo female travelers:
Iceland
Iceland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world, and it's an excellent destination for solo female travelers. With its stunning natural landscapes, friendly locals, and low crime rates, you can explore the country's waterfalls, glaciers, and hot springs with peace of mind. The relatively small population and strong emphasis on gender equality contribute to a comfortable and respectful atmosphere for women.
Japan
Japan is widely regarded as a safe and respectful country for solo female travelers. The low crime rates, efficient public transportation, and general politeness of the locals make it a great choice. While language barriers can be a challenge, the country's high level of organization and well-established tourism infrastructure make it easy to navigate. From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, Japan offers a unique and fulfilling experience.
New Zealand
With its breathtaking natural landscapes and friendly locals, New Zealand is a top pick for solo female travelers seeking adventure. The country has a strong emphasis on outdoor activities, making it ideal for hiking, skiing, and exploring the great outdoors. The laid-back culture and low crime rates contribute to a sense of safety and freedom, allowing you to explore the country's diverse landscapes without much worry.
Canada
Canada is widely regarded as one of the safest and most welcoming countries for solo female travelers. From the vibrant cities of Toronto and Vancouver to the stunning Rocky Mountains, Canada offers a diverse range of experiences. The country's progressive attitudes toward gender equality and low crime rates make it an excellent choice for women exploring on their own.
While no destination is completely free from potential risks, these places have established reputations for being relatively safe and respectful toward solo female travelers. However, it's always important to exercise caution, research your destination thoroughly, and stay aware of your surroundings. With the right precautions and an open mind, solo travel can be an empowering and rewarding experience for women seeking adventure and personal growth.
