I solo travelled throughout Thailand for a month and had no problems. Dress like a local and you'll get left alone most of the time.

Honestly? I never experience a lot of harassment and travel a TON. Latin men are always going to cat call, approach etc because being aggressive in this way is part of how they're socialized. I found Jamaica much the same. I am not interested in engaging in these encounters, so I just go about my business and haven't found any serious resistance to doing so. If you don't personalize it it's not personal. Also? Depends on where you are in a country. I find anywhere on the tourist path to be far worse for stereotypical behaviour. The further you get from those places the more grounded people get in my experience. Hope this helps. Have a great trip

Profile picture of Masha

Masha

That's pretty much my experience as well. I felt very safe in Turkey and Morocco. You're mostly fending off invitations to buy good in stores or at stalls. I've traveled through Spain and Portugal with no problems. Mostly it's just not feeling obligated to interact more than you want to.

Make sure you bring conservative clothes that cover shoulders & knees (okay to wear hiking shorts etc on the wadi tours) and you’ll have to rent an abaya if you plan to go to the mosque.

I traveled to Uganda by myself and lived in Gulu for 3 months. Several of my female colleagues also toured and worked around Rwanda, Tanzania and Zanzibar. I’d say do you research and pay attention to travel advisories. There’s some areas to avoid and other areas I felt safe but took precautions.

Profile picture of Helen

Helen

I never had any problems travelling solo in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Ireland, or England

Profile picture of Jasmine

Cat calling is typical in Central America for sure. I wouldn't travel to Nicaragua again by myself.... The men were very aggressive. My favorite places were Guatemala and Belize

Profile picture of Jessica

Jessica

I did Guatemala by myself and got cat called regularly but it was manageable and I never felt unsafe! Beautiful country too
good to know about your experience in Nicaragua

Profile picture of Maddy

Maddy

I found that Italian and Spanish men were quite inappropriate when I was traveling around as an 19 year old. I could handle it a lot better now, but still, those countries were the two worst I’ve been to in regard to unwanted attention and cat calling, etc.
America, Canada, New Zealand, Switzerland, Germany, France, Czech R, were all great though! I don’t recall anyone yelling at me or harassment while I was there
I’m still in Canada and love it - been here for a month and no men have been inappropriate!
Also Cambodia isn’t great for young white females if you’re by yourself. They also cat call and stare a lot

Also adding Japan ...Guatemala was okay for me at 21 but still a bit uncomfortable (I'm really sensitive to cat calling and stares and things though), Thailand was oddly a rough go when I did some solo travel

Profile picture of Rayna

Profile picture of Hedy

So true! I just went to Taiwan this December. The nice areas like Jiufen and Shifen were harder to get to (buses are available but sparsely). There were three of us so we hired a cab for the day, but I don't think I would have done that if I was by myself.

Barcelona down the la rumbla area was a bit dodgy. Thailand I felt super safe. Vietnam in Hanoi we had a taxi scammer kind of experience. I think probably every city has its dodgy parts, you just need to be careful.

Just want to say: It really depends on a person's particular experience. Things can happen, no matter what you do and how many precautions you take. You have to follow your gut and do what feels right, which may change over time and in a particular circumstance. Don't ever feel "uncourageous" just because you feel unsafe in a particular country or location, when others have felt safe. I've been solo traveling and living primarily in Latin America, but also in other parts of the world, for 12 years now. Sometimes I've felt and been safe, and sometimes horrible things have happened. Have a wonderful time, and follow your heart and gut. You'll make lifelong memories that'll change your life.

Pretty much anywhere in UK/Europe but examples would be England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man, France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, and Spain. Also felt completely safe in Morocco but I made sure to dress and act in accordance with the culture. Fiji was great when on the Yasawa Islands but didn't spend time on the mainland. Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand were also good/without any issues. Did not feel safe in India at all - even when dressed appropriately men were awful (cab drivers wouldn't even acknowledge me, even when I was in their cab! They would hear the location to go to and refuse to acknowledge my existence further than that. Could just be my experience though). Travelling solo is a fantastic experience, be safe, smart, and enjoy!

A BIG tip is to dress like the locals. My girlfriend and I were in India many years ago and we were harassed constantly (me for money) and her (for being blonde) I almost got into a few fights over it, it was that bad.
Anyway, as soon as we started dressing like the locals 90% of the harassment stopped.

I think a lot would depend upon one's age- I travelled a lot when I was younger and felt uncomfortable in a few places on public transport (Japan, Barbados). However, as a woman in my 30s, I lived in Israel, and also spent time in Thailand and never had any issues. My sister also had trouble-free trips recently to Peru and Iceland. I've had female friends who had very difficult experiences in Egypt and Morocco, even with male companions.

Just be careful on the subways in Paris. There's organized crime there and requires a watchful eye not to go into a car with a few men by the door and where it looks like a man may enter just after you. (If it looks like this may happen, switch cars at the last second.)

Like Gloria, I've traveled a fair bit (over 30 countries in 5 continents), and for 99% of the time, I traveled alone. I was between the ages of 20 and 30 at the time. The only place where I experienced anything that might remotely be described as "harassment" was Tunisia in 2010, when a random dude saw me taking a photo on the main street and kept saying "hey lady, do you want to get a drink? Where you from?" He eventually left me alone when I ignored him, and everybody else I met in Tunisia was amazing.
That said, I've felt safest in Western and Eastern European countries and South America. I enjoyed Malta (mentioned by Lisa) above. I love England, Wales, France, Spain, Italy, Poland, Germany, Austria, Hungary, and Switzerland. I've had nothing but positive experiences in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay (though the latter tends to be expensive). Argentina was super easy to get around, and I don't speak Spanish. Feel free to PM me if you want to ask any questions. I'm a huge proponent of solo female travel and have spent time studying or working in Italy, Russia, Ukraine and Belgium.

Thank you!! I'm considering Eastern Europe...are there any countries in specific you particularly enjoyed?

Profile picture of Taryn

Taryn

I'll admit that I'm biased because I speak Russian and have lived in Ukraine and Russia. I really love both of those countries, but realize that it's not always the easiest to get around because of the language barrier. I was last in Russia in 2012, and I would say St. Petersburg was the most tourist-friendly. I hear things have improved in Moscow, and have had friends who did European Russia without any issue.
I really like Poland - I was in Krakow and Warsaw, and had a fantastic time. I do not speak Polish at all, and found it really manageable.
Depending on your division between Central and Eastern Europe - I loved Hungary and would love to go back. Budapest was amazing, and when I was there in early 2014, I had an awesome little airbnb studio that felt really safe. I found that most Hungarians (at least in Budapest) didn't expect visitors to speak Hungarian, so it wasn't super difficult to get around. I managed to buy a train ticket to Vienna without issue, and bought stuff in stores, took trains, etc, just fine.
Bratislava, Slovakia was gorgeous, and felt super safe.

Sorry, that wasn't very specific
I really like Eastern Europe and it's hard to choose

Profile picture of Taryn

Taryn

Are you considering anywhere in particular?
The worst harassment I encountered in Eastern Europe was in crossing the border between Ukraine and Poland on a train, when the Polish customs agent asked me why I didn't have any illicit alcohol, cigarettes or drugs on me. He called me boring

I want get on the trans.siberian train next spring..I heard it's very safe for solo women..what do you think on that?
Also, in order to get a visa, we need an "invitation letter"...from who did you get it from?

Profile picture of Taryn

Taryn

Line yep, it's pretty safe for solo women! I've taken trains all over Russia and only once ever had an experience that I might describe as irritating (an old drunk submarine captain wanted to talk). I find going second class (kupe) is the best balance in terms of comfort/safety. There are four bunks to a compartment, and compartments have doors that usually lock. In first class, there's just two bunks (so you could potentially get stuck with one awful person) and third class (platzkart) is an open wagon of bunks (no privacy, harder to sleep).
Each compartment has a provodnik/provodnitsa (a conductor) who is responsible for tickets and passenger comfort. Any problems, and they'll usually sort it out in my experience.
The usual caveats apply - don't leave valuables hanging around in plain view.
Most other passengers are cool and willing to chat on long distances (and share food!). I've had some really interesting conversations with people.
Regarding the invitation letter - most travel agencies will do you one. Check out WayToRussia- when I was still going back, they were the go-to people for stuff like that.

Profile picture of Line

Line

Taryn thank you very much for all that! I checked with some travel agencies in Canada but they will only do it if you buy with them

Profile picture of Taryn

Taryn

Line you're welcome! That sucks about the Canadian agencies. I'm trying to think what I did in the past - most of the time, I had a university invite me because I was taking courses first and then traveling. I think I got my tourist invite through one of the companies suggested by Way to Russia.
I used to just send my applications directly to the consulate but now I believe they make you go in person (the consulate that serves BC is back east, so it's not realistic) or you have to pay and submit it through a Visa agency, thereby adding to the cost.

1st husband died mysteriously there (Jamaica) - 3rd world country with no proper facilities and apparently cannot send body back home without cremation. Claim no real refrigerators and it takes 3 weeks to a month to get the remains back. No pictures and hand written death certificate. Jamaica, a dangerous place to be. In fact, 5 years after his death our daughter was getting phone calls from Jamaica and they were asking for her dad and said they knew he was there!! Explain the logic of THAT to your kids!!

Line Well I live here permanently for work. I find the groceries very expensive. If your a party goer, the clubs love ladies and always offer free drinks for ladies all night long. Lots of pool parties and brunches to go to. But for the travel aspect, I would probably choose something else (just my opinion). Also it depends on when you want to go to Dubai. Right now it is winter but as we move into the summer months, it becomes unbearable to be outside. So most people are stuck inside with their air conditioners on full blast

Profile picture of Kevin

So a travel destination only for a few days? Kinda like Vegas? Also extremely hot during the summer.

Dayna I'm not planning on moving there..I don't party and won't be cooking..and of course everybody knows you go there during winter..who would want go there in the summer time! Safe Places for Solo Female Travelers

As a solo female traveler, safety and freedom from harassment are top priorities. While every destination has its own unique challenges, there are certain places around the world that have gained a reputation for being particularly welcoming and secure for women exploring on their own. Here are some recommendations based on personal experiences and feedback from fellow solo female travelers:

Iceland

Iceland consistently ranks as one of the safest countries in the world, and it's an excellent destination for solo female travelers. With its stunning natural landscapes, friendly locals, and low crime rates, you can explore the country's waterfalls, glaciers, and hot springs with peace of mind. The relatively small population and strong emphasis on gender equality contribute to a comfortable and respectful atmosphere for women.

Japan

Japan is widely regarded as a safe and respectful country for solo female travelers. The low crime rates, efficient public transportation, and general politeness of the locals make it a great choice. While language barriers can be a challenge, the country's high level of organization and well-established tourism infrastructure make it easy to navigate. From the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the serene temples of Kyoto, Japan offers a unique and fulfilling experience.

New Zealand

With its breathtaking natural landscapes and friendly locals, New Zealand is a top pick for solo female travelers seeking adventure. The country has a strong emphasis on outdoor activities, making it ideal for hiking, skiing, and exploring the great outdoors. The laid-back culture and low crime rates contribute to a sense of safety and freedom, allowing you to explore the country's diverse landscapes without much worry.

Canada

Canada is widely regarded as one of the safest and most welcoming countries for solo female travelers. From the vibrant cities of Toronto and Vancouver to the stunning Rocky Mountains, Canada offers a diverse range of experiences. The country's progressive attitudes toward gender equality and low crime rates make it an excellent choice for women exploring on their own.

While no destination is completely free from potential risks, these places have established reputations for being relatively safe and respectful toward solo female travelers. However, it's always important to exercise caution, research your destination thoroughly, and stay aware of your surroundings. With the right precautions and an open mind, solo travel can be an empowering and rewarding experience for women seeking adventure and personal growth.
