Does anyone know if it's better to use the American Express points vs. aeroplan points to book just flights? I am wanting to book a one way flight to Sydney, Australia but not sure if i should transfer my AMEX points to aeroplan or not... thanks

aeroplan recently had a promo where if you converted other points to aeroplan points, they'd give you a bonus. I'm not sure if they're still doing that our bit but might be with checking out

Depends on your dates and if aero plans point calculations. Sometimes it's good others they are not good for quantity of points needed. With Amex it's pretty well always the se and really easy to contact and sort out. Aero pan are a law unto themselves.

Conversion bonus doesn't apply if you're converting from amex.

If you have enough aeroplan points the best option is to buy the tickets through aeroplan and pay for the fees/taxes with Amex points.

agree with what has been said before...however, if you find a flight that you want on google flights, for example, you can note the flight numbers, then phone AMEX and they can book that flight for you so you get the cheap fare and use your points. I have done this with both AMEX and RBC.

Should You Use American Express or Aeroplan Points for Flights?

When it comes to redeeming points for flights, the decision between using American Express Membership Rewards points or Aeroplan points can be a tricky one. Both programs have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice ultimately depends on your specific travel needs and preferences.

American Express Membership Rewards Points

American Express Membership Rewards points are highly flexible and can be transferred to various airline and hotel partners, including Aeroplan. This flexibility allows you to shop around and potentially find better redemption rates or availability with different partners.

However, when it comes to booking flights directly through the American Express Travel portal, the redemption rates may not be as favorable as transferring points to airline partners. Additionally, you'll be subject to taxes, fees, and surcharges when booking flights through American Express.

Aeroplan Points

Aeroplan is Air Canada's loyalty program, and redeeming points directly through Aeroplan can offer some advantages for certain routes and redemption types. Aeroplan has fixed mileage levels for flights, which can make it easier to plan and budget your point redemptions.

One potential benefit of using Aeroplan points for your one-way flight to Sydney, Australia, is that you may find better availability or lower taxes and fees compared to booking through American Express Travel or other partner airlines. Aeroplan also offers stopovers on certain redemptions, allowing you to break up your journey.

Considerations for Booking to Sydney

When booking a one-way flight to Sydney, Australia, consider the following factors:

  • Availability of award seats: Check both American Express Transfer Partners and Aeroplan for award seat availability on your desired dates and routes.
  • Taxes and fees: Compare the taxes and fees associated with each booking option, as these can vary significantly.
  • Routing and connections: Evaluate the routing and number of connections for each option, as this can impact your overall travel experience.
  • Potential fuel surcharges: Be aware of potential fuel surcharges, which can add significant costs to your redemption.

Ultimately, the choice between using American Express or Aeroplan points for your one-way flight to Sydney will depend on the specific redemption rates, availability, and additional costs associated with each option. It's recommended to thoroughly research and compare both programs before making your decision.
