Is it Possible to Keep a Rental Car for a Multi-Month Trip Across Europe?

Question:

Has anyone flown to Athens and then rented a car to drive through Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and then into Austria or Berlin and drop the car there? We like to do multi-month driving trips and are wondering if anyone has any specific experience with keeping the car thru those countries, or do the agencies not let you cross country with a rental over there? We've had no problem doing this in other parts of Europe.

We rented a car in Croatia in 2022 and the contract said we couldn’t cross into other counties. Luckily the new bridge just opened so u could go to Dubrovnik without passing thru Bosnia

Just buy a second hand car at the point if it's multimonth and resell it at the end. Never done it before but that seems to make more sense and I know people who've done it in other countries

Timothy thanks. I've heard of people doing that but there can be other factors to consider such as insurance, buying something with a problem (which really puts a damper.on the trip), etc. We find it easier and less stressful to rent vehicles. More expensive, yes, but more reliable. Appreciate your input though.

Driving Through Europe: Renting a Car and Crossing Borders

Are you considering flying to Athens and then embarking on a multi-month driving trip through Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Austria or Berlin? If so, you may be wondering if it's possible to rent a car in Athens and keep it for the entire journey, crossing multiple borders along the way.

While renting a car and driving through multiple European countries is a common practice, there are some things to consider when it comes to crossing borders with a rental car. Each car rental agency has its own policies regarding crossing borders, so it's important to check with the specific agency you plan to rent from.

Some rental car agencies may allow you to cross borders with the rental car, but they may charge an additional fee for this privilege. Others may have restrictions on which countries you can enter with the rental car. It's important to clarify these details before embarking on your journey.

If you have successfully rented a car in other parts of Europe and crossed borders without any issues, there is a good chance that you will be able to do the same for your trip through Albania, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, and Austria or Berlin. However, it's always best to double-check with the rental car agency to avoid any unexpected surprises.

Overall, with proper planning and communication with the rental car agency, it is possible to rent a car in Athens and drive through multiple countries in Europe, ending your journey in either Austria or Berlin. Just make sure to familiarize yourself with the agency's policies and any additional fees that may apply.
