I don't know if it's safe to drive in Jordan but I do know that it's safer for crimes against tourists than England or Germany.

Don’t drive in Jordan if you can help it. Driving is crazy there. Also, my friends just came back from there and got in a fender bender

Edit: don’t drive in Amman. I’d still avoid driving all together if you can.

Went to Jordan over 10 years ago - rented a car and drove around and has zero problems (totally avoided Amman). What a beautiful country. Probably my most favourite place I’ve ever visited.

I wanted to do this but was s advise not to, because if you have a mechanical problem you have no idea where to go or who to ask for help. If you need gas, you have no idea where they hide. You cannot buy anything in a Bedouin villages as a woman. I was asked to stay in the car when the driver would go and get food for me. I loved my trip, people were lovely and friendly everywhere. I had a wonderful time. In a Bedouin village they refused to carry my bag (he was a man an would not carry my bags) , I was not allowed to hold the reins of the camel, another lady from Spain her husband was allowed but not her. But it is their country

We (two girls)rented a car for a week in Amman, and then drove all the way to the south Aqaba in 2017,it was pretty easy except in Amman, the traffic in Amman was busy and the drivers looked crazy, but in other places it was good, just slow down and be careful. The stuffs of gas station helped us every time. The only thing we had a flat tire on the way from Petra to Wadi rum,pay more attention on this road near to Wadi Rum because I heard serval travelers also had flat tire on there. And the process of repair of the tire under insurance in Aqaba ,returning the car were smoothly.
This was my experience which was a really wonderful road trip, hope it helps.

I drove in 2018, it wasn't bad (Amman, Dead Sea, Petra, Aqaba).
I assume the issue might be 'city' driving and doing it during the day time. Since we always left early and came back at night time, it wasn't an issue for me. I can't comment on daytime driving.
Note, I found that in some foreign countries they don't follow the rules as much, as long as you drive at your pace, you should be okay (just pay attention to your surroundings). I also did not run into car troubles including gas (always fill up whenever I found a gas station).

Wendy I was going to write this exactly. Only an experienced driver should drive around Amman - the way the traffic moves (especially on the outskirts) is
. Totally fine when you get out of Amman though. Get a good GPS - we almost ended up in Israel.

I’m currently living in Amman. Feel free to message with questions. uber is super cheap locally and driving is doable. You just have to be completely engaged and not on autopilot like we tend to be in Toronto. Must be comfortable with roundabouts

Just got back from Jordan. Depends where you start but do a day Carless in Amann and then rent from airport. Begin your journey on the outskirts and then very easy to drive. Tons of tourist renting a car from amann airport and having a safe, joyful time. Be sure to visit wadi rum it was fantastic! Get the Jordan pass worth it.

Renting a Car in Jordan: Safety for Tourists

If you are planning a trip to Jordan and considering renting a car to explore the country, you may be wondering about the safety of driving in Jordan as a tourist. While driving in any foreign country can be a bit daunting, Jordan is generally considered a safe destination for tourists to drive in.

Driving Conditions

The roads in Jordan are generally well-maintained, especially in major cities like Amman. However, outside of the cities, you may encounter more rural roads that can be narrow and winding. It is important to exercise caution when driving in these areas, especially if you are not used to driving in such conditions.

Traffic Laws

It is important to familiarize yourself with Jordan's traffic laws before hitting the road. In Jordan, they drive on the right side of the road, and speed limits are generally posted in kilometers per hour. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers, and using a mobile phone while driving is prohibited.

Navigation

GPS navigation is widely available in Jordan, and most rental cars come equipped with GPS systems. However, it is always a good idea to have a map or directions handy in case you lose GPS signal or encounter any issues with the technology.

Overall Safety

While driving in Jordan as a tourist is generally safe, it is important to exercise caution and be aware of your surroundings at all times. Avoid driving at night, especially in rural areas, and be mindful of local driving customs and etiquette.

In conclusion, renting a car in Jordan can be a great way to explore the country at your own pace. With proper preparation and awareness, driving in Jordan as a tourist can be a safe and enjoyable experience.
