Totally look up scams and things to watch out for in turkey. Those sales people can be convincing
Hagia Sofia is beautiful. Take the ferry accross to the eastern side some days there's a local market. Maybe sail the bosphorous. Play some backgammon drink all the tea

Idk I was on my own there for three weeks without a guide - but it couldn't hurt
But- there's lots of scam guides if people just saying things and then bring you to their friends carpet shop. So find a legit one

I just returned from there, no guide. Almost all tourist attractions are within 3 blocks of each other. It's very hilly but easily walkable. People will try to lure you into their shops, even if their shop is 4 or 5 blocks away, also they use young children to beg for money. The parents are always close by.
