Most cost effective way and shortest travel time from Edmonton to Thailand ? Family of 5 with 3 kids under 10 ?
Anyone have experience with something similar location and family ? I assume no direct flights from Edmonton? Closest direct flight would be vancouver ?
Any advise or insight would be appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Probably have to transit via a hub like Hong Kong, Tokyo, etc. Easier to get to Asia via Vancouver first.

Highly recommend going through Korean Air. Had a great flight and amazing service. The food on the flight was amazing and they kept us well fed. We flew air canada to Vancouver, Korean air to Seoul, then to Bangkok. Our flight was 24 hours headed to Thailand and about 21 hours back.
Flying with Korean air they gave us each a blanket, bottled water, and a little package that included: slippers, toothbrush and toothpaste.
If you have any questions feel free to PM and ask. I just came back home about 2 weeks ago and I was in Thailand for 3.5 weeks.

What prices were you all looking like return per person ?

William we paid about $1000. I’ve seen them quite a bit higher and even lower. We went with slightly higher price for a shorter flight home

Carlene Watts Wolen We flew EVA to Bali last year. Thought the plane and service were very good. Their hub is Taipei, so most flights from Vancouver land there and then you move on to most places in SE Asia, including Thailand. Pricing was very comparable and for the level of service, the price was very good.

Korean Air is great! Years ago I was flying back from Thailand and had a long delay in Korea. They provided a Hyatt hotel with food at NO charge so I can nap, shower and eat before my next flight home. Was fantastic!

No direct flights through Vancouver either. There are often flight deals posted but you have to act quickly. Accommodation is tricky for families of 5 in Thailand.

Lots of carriers stopping in many places throughout the world. If you are travelling with children I would suggest you stay over night in Amsterdam to break up the trip. I have traveled from Edmonton to Vancouver or San Francisco, to Seoul, South Korea, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Amsterdam, eventually landing in Bangkok. Pre plan well in advance if you do not have anyone meeting you at the other end or if this is your first trip. klm first class can be just a bit higher in price than some of the regular flights.. JAL, Korean Air and cathay pacific are good carriers with lots of leg room. Good luck. (Almost all hotel rooms in Thailand are super big).

Avoid Flying through China. I’ve had the displeasure of flying China southern and eastern. The food was horrible no one spoke English and someone in first class was smoking in first class and everyone seemed cool with it. The airports were worse. The expiereince is still Fresh because It was 2 weeks ago. I’m still in Thailand and dreading flying back on China east. If I ever do Thailand again I’m definitely going through Korea air. Either way make sure you get to the boardinghouse desk early And request a bassinet even if you don’t need it it’s good to have the extra leg room.

Traveling from Edmonton to Thailand with Kids

Planning a family vacation to Thailand from Edmonton can be a daunting task, especially when you have three kids under the age of 10. However, with proper planning and research, you can make the journey cost-effective and enjoyable for everyone.

Flights and Routes

As you mentioned, there are no direct flights from Edmonton to Thailand. The closest major airport with direct flights to Thailand is Vancouver. Here are a few options to consider:

  1. Edmonton to Vancouver, then direct to Bangkok: This is likely the most convenient and shortest route. Airlines like Air Canada and WestJet offer direct flights from Vancouver to Bangkok, with a flight time of around 11-12 hours.
  2. Edmonton to Vancouver, then connect through another major Asian hub: You can also consider connecting through major hubs like Tokyo, Seoul, or Hong Kong. This might add a bit of travel time but could potentially save you some money.
  3. Edmonton to Toronto, then direct to Bangkok: If you find better flight deals from Toronto to Bangkok, you can consider flying to Toronto first and then taking a direct flight to Bangkok.

Cost-Effective Tips

Traveling with a family of five can be expensive, but there are ways to keep costs down:

  • Book early: Booking flights and accommodations well in advance can help you get better deals.
  • Be flexible with travel dates: If possible, try to be flexible with your travel dates to take advantage of lower fares.
  • Consider vacation packages: Look for vacation packages that include flights, accommodations, and sometimes even activities or transfers.
  • Utilize travel rewards: If you have travel rewards from credit cards or airline loyalty programs, this is a great opportunity to redeem them.
  • Travel light: Minimize checked baggage fees by packing light and sharing luggage among family members.

Family-Friendly Accommodations and Activities

Thailand is a family-friendly destination, offering a wide range of accommodations and activities suitable for kids. Consider staying in resorts or hotels with kid-friendly amenities like pools, playgrounds, and kid's clubs. Popular family-friendly destinations in Thailand include Phuket, Koh Samui, and Chiang Mai.

Seek advice from fellow travelers or travel forums to learn from their experiences traveling to Thailand with kids. With careful planning and the right mindset, your family vacation to Thailand can be an unforgettable and enriching experience for everyone.
