What are the best activities and tours in Manzanillo, Mexico for a first-timer?

Going to be in Manzanillo, Mexico for a week in March. Looking for advice on activities, tours and recreation. Never done Mexico before and we will be staying with extended family at an all inclusive hotel. Any advice would be appreciated. I don't really want to sit in a resort all week. Done a little research and would be particularly interested in any feedback on the fishing charters in town and the parks, ruins and volcanoes located around Colima. Thanks in advance.

Jump on a public bus for around $1 and explore. It's a beautiful part of Mexico with great people.

Thanks for the advice James. Did you do this yourself and what kind of places did you see? I have heard that it is not the safest idea to travel outside of the resort areas, what was your experience?

Ive never felt safer in Mexico than in Manzanillo. We took our kids 5&7 through the villages where the locals live on the public bus. Didn't go on any tours as the kids were too young for the 8 hour tours etc.
I heard great things about Danitours if you want to book something. Google him.. great reviews on TripAdvisor.
A really cool little beach bar is Oasis beach club in Club Santiago. Chairs and umbrella 2 feet from the incoming surf on one of the best beaches in the area.

Isla Navidad is a fun destination. Just few minutes on the boat. Nice beaches, v good (and cheap) Mexican restaurants with fresh sea food dishes. My husband loved the lobster there...

What's the best currency to carry there? I've seen some prices in pesos, others in USD, and read that the city gets a lot of Canadians visiting.
