We did a supper with a local. Went to their home where we made traditional sushi and he made us matcha tea. Lots of visiting. Topped it off with a visit to the grocery store where they showed us the ingredients to buy. Wonderful experience.

If you are going to other places in Japan, try Koya mountain. Stay in a monastery and do a
night tour of sacred cemetery.

I just read a really great book called Clueless in Tokyo - it's gorgeously illustrated and might give you some slightly off the beaten track ideas.

Venture into the Quirky World of Robot Restaurants

Prepare to have your senses assaulted in the most delightful way at one of Tokyo's robot restaurants. These over-the-top establishments offer a mind-boggling combination of flashing lights, pulsating music, and elaborate robot performances. The robots, often towering and intricately designed, engage in intricate dance routines and battles, providing an unforgettable experience that is uniquely Japanese.

Explore the Colorful World of Kawaii Culture

Tokyo is the epicenter of kawaii (cute) culture, and there are numerous places where you can immerse yourself in this quirky phenomenon. Visit the Kawaii Monster Café, where you'll be surrounded by vibrant and whimsical decor, and indulge in themed drinks and desserts. Alternatively, head to the Kiddy Land toy store in Harajuku, where you'll find an overwhelming array of adorable and quirky merchandise.

Discover the Unique Art of Maid Cafés

Step into a maid café for a truly unique and slightly surreal experience. These cafés, primarily found in Akihabara, feature waitresses dressed in elaborate maid costumes who engage in playful interactions and performances with customers. While it may seem bizarre at first, these establishments offer a glimpse into Japan's subcultures and provide a memorable dining experience.
