I’m going on a cruise soon, leaving from Texas. Am I better off changing cash here or there? Thanks!

Sorry but I disagree with everyone. I’ve always found taking cash out from an ATM in the country I’m visiting to be easiest and economical. But it’s really negligible.

As you maybe know, don’t much cash on ship. Whatever works best for you. FYI, in Los Cabo’s, we could not exchange money at bank without passport. (Which was on ship) U would at least take some US.

Should I Change Cash Before or During a Cruise?

If you're planning a cruise vacation and wondering whether it's better to exchange your cash before or during the trip, there are a few factors to consider. In this blog post, we'll explore the pros and cons of each option to help you make an informed decision.

Changing Cash Before the Cruise

One advantage of exchanging your cash before the cruise is that you can shop around for the best exchange rates. Banks, credit unions, and specialized currency exchange services typically offer competitive rates, especially if you're exchanging a large amount of cash. This can save you money compared to exchanging money on the ship or at ports of call, where rates may not be as favorable.

Additionally, having your foreign currency ready before the trip can provide peace of mind and convenience. You won't have to worry about finding an exchange service or dealing with long lines during your cruise.

Changing Cash During the Cruise

While it's generally recommended to exchange a portion of your cash before the cruise, there are also advantages to changing money during the trip. Many cruise ships have onboard currency exchange services, which can be convenient if you need additional cash or find yourself in an unexpected situation.

Furthermore, if you're visiting multiple destinations with different currencies, it may be more practical to exchange cash as you go. This way, you can avoid carrying large amounts of foreign currency and reduce the risk of losing or misplacing it.

Tips for Exchanging Cash

Regardless of when you decide to exchange your cash, here are some tips to keep in mind:

  • Compare exchange rates from different sources to get the best deal.
  • Avoid exchanging money at airports or hotels, as their rates are typically higher.
  • Consider using a credit or debit card for larger purchases, as they often offer better exchange rates than cash.
  • Notify your bank or credit card company about your travel plans to avoid potential issues with using your cards abroad.
  • Keep your cash and valuables secure while traveling.

In conclusion, whether you should change cash before or during your cruise depends on your personal preferences and travel plans. By considering the pros and cons of each option and following the tips provided, you can make an informed decision and ensure a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience.
