Should I rent a car away from the airport for a Death Valley and Sedona adventure?

Question:

I'm thinking about renting a car in Vegas and visiting Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Sedona, Grand Canyon... Any tips on good car rental places? Do I need to look away from the airport? Also, I've never rented a car before, anything I should know? I have May 19-May 24 for this road trip.

we have a hotel booked on the strip May25 for a week. I thought we'd do some exploring around the state(s) before hitting the strip this time

so flying into lv on the 19 & you want to rent right away? Might as well stay with the airport car rental. Last time we rented a car to go to Grand Canyon... We rented from hotel we were staying at!

I found it way cheaper to rent from the airport vs the strip. I usually use Priceline to make my reso as I've found they usually have the cheapest rates. Print the reservation though, I've heard stories about not honouring if you don't have proof and Priceline didn't send it to them.

Heres a tip, make sure to look really carefully at the car and take photos with your phone of any dents and scratches In all airports where you pick the cars up from has terrible lighting so its easy to miss damage done by a previous renter. However when you go drop off the car they have big lights and will try and get any damage not declared when you checked it out on you.

If you own a car here you can save big on the insurance on the rental. Our personal car insurance includes, for a few dollars a month more, an extension of all of our coverages to North American car rentals. When we rent a car we bring a photocopy of our insurance and we don't have to buy any insurance with the rental company. Also both of us can drive the rental for the base price.

Also check with your credit card some cards include the insurance on rentals, and if your an icbc roadstar you won't need the car company insurance you are covered!

Research the insurance too. I got a great daily deal on the East coast but insurance cost for the 4 days was similar cost to insurance for 3 months in BC

I called enterprise rental at Vegas airport directly and got a minivan for $8 a day. My taxes were more than the rental. Lol. Totally worth it. Valet is free at every hotel/casino.

Just got back and rented a car from hertz... Long weekend rates were $20 a day. Shuttle to/from airport. Parking at casinos is free. So much more freedom with the rental!! Highly recommend it!!

Costco has fabulous deals. We were in Palm Springs for two months earlier this year and we paid $1150 (U.S.) and I did a price comparison with a lot of other sites and Costco was the one.
