It’s a perception due to media coverage. It’s the Border towns and inland states. Jalisco and Naryiat are great. Sayulita Puerto Vallarta all good

Barra de Potosi (just south of Zihuatenejo) is wonderful! Very chill fishing village, no big hotels (or ATMs): just pure relaxation.
Or Troncones: more of an ex-pat town to the north. Huatulco is beautiful + close by, San Agustinillo is a popular family beach destination - waves can get a little bumpy there. Mahahual (south of Playa del Carmen) is protected by a reef + has shallow warm waters perfect for kids to play in.

any beach/tourist/resort town. We are in San Jose del Cabo, it's gorgeous here! would also recommend Mahahual (little off the beaten path on the southern portion of the Yucatan), Puerto Morelos (between Cancun and Playa del Carmen) Isla Mujeres

Stay away from border towns. The rest of Mexico is safe.
Have been to Cancun/Cozumel, Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos and Ixtapa Zihuatanejo. Some places more than once. Never felt unsafe.

All depends on how you carry yourself and how you treat others... Just like everywhere else in the world (but yeah, avoid border towns based on the mere question)

Isla Mujeres hands down. Great little island with tons to do and great food. Lots of beach clubs and only a short 20 min ferry ride away from Cancun. Missing it terribly

Cabo has brought in a military presence to ward off the cartel. It might be the safest place in Mexico now? Great family fun there.
We have a place there & I feel safe all the time. But like any place you go to you just have to be respectful & aware.

Holbox is an amazing, not so hidden gem (seems to be growing in popularity)
I was there a few weeks ago and it is incredibly safe. Message me for any info but I’ve blogged my main tips here:

Mérida and nearby beaches. Oaxaca. PPuerto Vallarta, Sayulita, San Miguel de Allende, Palenque. I’d avoid Playa del Carmen and Cancun. Expensive tourist traps and a bombed ferry. (My mistake, see explanation in responses). Tulum seems nice and Isla Mujeres is great. The cenotes on that coast are also great.

The bombed ferry was the owner who was having his license suspended and wanted to get an insurance claim.

Jeannette P Gallant thanks, although that doesn't help the injured.

Profile picture of Jeannett

Linda it was the implication of terrorist or drug gang crime and making it a scary place.

Jeannette P Gallant Absolutely agreed.
