Hello all! Needing a bit of advice. I'm Heading to Morocco on a solo trip for 2 and a half weeks in Nov. I'll be landing in Marakesh and I'm hoping I can head over to Spain as well some time during my trip. Any tips on where to stay in Marakesh and things to see. Also if you've travelled to Spain from Marakesh did you take the ferry or by plane? Any information would be great!

We spent 2 weeks in Morocco in spring and stayed in. Rial inside the Medina.(city centre) We had a guide for the most part, which I think was smart. Some aspects of Marakash were a bit scary.

How did you book your guide?

We were a group of 8 and booked a land package through Intrepid Travel. (Based out of US but Canadian funds) If you are just looking for a day here and there, I think you can do it through hotel. Sometimes language can be an issue. The Medina is really the place to stay if you want a Moroccan experience, rather than Canadian. The place we stayed at included breakfast which I think most do. Breakfast is juice, coffee, bread & jam, and yogurt, occasionally boiled eggs. Tipping is definitely expected.

I stayed at a great place inside the Medina called Les Borjs de la Kasbah. Not far from Jmaa El Fna where the entertainment and souks are. Also arranged for a guide and a camel ride through the hotel.

Going up to Spain I took the ferry from the new terminal at Tangier to Algeciras. It was a nice taxi ride through the countryside to gry to the new terminal from the train station. The terminal was pure chaos so need to have looooooots of patience. And there was nothing past security except vending machines so grab something before you pass through.

I stayed at riad Massine II in the medina. Be aware that any place u stay at in the medina is walking only, the taxi will drop u off at a gate and then u walk a series of alleyways to ur destination. Sounds scary but it's not. riad Massine II also does a 3 day trip to the desert, gorges and other towns...glad I did it. I took the overnight train from tangier to Marrakech and back. First time I got a sleeper cabin shared (4 bunks) the second time I got a chair cabin (6 chairs). The train is very hot and not very comfortable and the bathrooms, we'll try not to use them towards the end of the journey. Oh yeah always have toilet paper or tissues on u, it's not always available in the bathrooms. The train is an experience and I would do it again just be prepared for what it is. The ferry is really nice but getting on and off the ferry is a complete zoo! Pretty much your whole day will be used up by ferry travel and customs. PM me if u have any questions, Morocco is such a magical place!

I took the ferry from Algiers to Tarifa. Tarifa is a little surf town that I really liked but I was there in June, not sure what it's like in November.

Thank you!! I'll look into this. How long was the ferry ride? It says an hour on the ferry website.

I lived in Morocco for 4 years.. all must-see places are listed on the comments above.. Plane is very cheap to and from Marakkech.. Good thing about Morocco is they have a train from north to South.. Be very careful when you go to medina (markets). I am talking about pickpockets..
Also, please don't be shocked when you see parents hitting their kids on the road or in public places.. that's just normal there.. And they love to shout and use hand gestures when they argue.. I was kinda used to it after a while haha..

Traveling to Morocco and Spain

Hello all! If you're planning a solo trip to Morocco and Spain, you're in for an amazing adventure! Here are some tips and recommendations for your trip:

Staying in Marrakesh

When in Marrakesh, I highly recommend staying in a traditional riad in the Medina. Riads are beautiful traditional Moroccan houses with a central courtyard or garden. They offer a unique and authentic experience. Some popular riads in Marrakesh include Riad BE Marrakech and Riad Dar Anika.

Things to see in Marrakesh

While in Marrakesh, make sure to visit the Jardin Majorelle, the Bahia Palace, and the Koutoubia Mosque. Don't miss the bustling souks in the Medina where you can shop for unique souvenirs and try delicious Moroccan street food.

Traveling to Spain

If you're looking to travel to Spain from Marrakesh, you have two main options: taking the ferry from Tangier to Tarifa or flying from Marrakesh to a major Spanish city like Barcelona or Madrid. The ferry offers a scenic and budget-friendly option, while flying is quicker and more convenient.

Regardless of how you choose to travel, make sure to check visa requirements and travel advisories before your trip. And most importantly, have a fantastic time exploring Morocco and Spain!
