Sara we were able to be right next to them as they were crawling out of their nests, but not allowed to touch them as this is at a reserve (other than to flip them over if they got stuck on their back) but we saw hundreds of them out of so many nests. Got to cheer them on when they finally hit the water.

Kelli we watched them hatch in January. The security guard at the resort used his flashlight to find them hatching and we watched them waddle into into the ocean. It happens quickly.

I have participated in two turtle releases in Mazatlan. Estrella Del Mar resort has a sea turtle conservatory on site, and do turtle releases as they hatch, usually in the late fall into winter. You do not have to be a guest at the resort to visit.

Unforgettable Experiences: Witnessing Baby Turtles Hatch and Reach the Ocean

Watching baby turtles emerge from their nests and make their way to the ocean is a truly mesmerizing experience that nature enthusiasts and animal lovers alike cherish. If you're looking to be a part of this incredible journey, there are several destinations around the world that offer unforgettable opportunities to witness this remarkable event.

Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

Costa Rica's Tortuguero National Park is a prime location for turtle nesting and hatching. From July to October, the park's black sand beaches become a nesting ground for the endangered green turtle. Visitors can participate in guided night tours to observe the nesting process and, if they're lucky, witness the hatchlings emerge and make their way to the sea.

Ostional Wildlife Refuge, Costa Rica

Another incredible spot in Costa Rica is the Ostional Wildlife Refuge, located on the Pacific coast. This refuge is famous for its massive arribadas, or synchronized nesting events, of the Olive Ridley sea turtles. During these events, thousands of turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, creating a breathtaking spectacle. Visitors can participate in guided tours to help the hatchlings reach the ocean safely.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve, Belize

Belize's Hol Chan Marine Reserve is a renowned destination for snorkeling and diving, but it also offers opportunities to witness turtle hatchlings. The reserve is home to nesting sites for hawksbill, green, and loggerhead turtles. During the hatching season (typically May to November), visitors can join guided tours to observe the hatchlings and assist in their journey to the sea.

Ningaloo Coast, Western Australia

The Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia is a World Heritage-listed area known for its diverse marine life, including nesting sea turtles. From November to March, several species of turtles, such as the green, hawksbill, and loggerhead, come ashore to lay their eggs. Visitors can join eco-tours or volunteer programs to help monitor and protect the nests, and witness the hatchlings make their way to the ocean.

Remember, when participating in these experiences, it's crucial to follow the guidance of local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and well-being of the turtles and their habitats. By being responsible and respectful visitors, we can contribute to the conservation efforts of these incredible creatures and create lasting memories.
