iceland was amazing, I did it solo, one of my most memorable trips. Highly recommended. but its a costly destination. Best keep that in mind.

Thailand!
EM
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia. I wouldn't do India on your own.
Laura
I agree - have done all these alone, did India with my husband and was very glad not to be alone there.
Holly
I just got back from southern India (completely solo, independent travel) and was fine.
EM
I was in the North part.
Holly
Did you run into problems? I had challenges for sure, but thankfully felt completely safe.
EM
No major problems but I felt way more relax and safer in other countries in Asia.
EM
I am glad you enjoyed your trip! I enjoyed it too but in a different way. I prefer Vietnam, Thailand and Camodia.
Sandeep
China
Laura
China is awesome but doing it alone could be very lonely unless you speak chinese. There are not as many backpackers and solo travellers to chat with along the way (none in a lot of places).
Paul
If you stick to the east it should be fine. People who ask for solo trip off the beaten path probably won't have problems with loneliness. I'm going taiwan-hk-macau-shanghai-beijing in September, alone, with no knowledge of chinese...there are tons of hostels I'll be staying at and excitement prevails...haven't even thought about loneliness
Laura
I did smaller places in the east and south, had enough chinese to talk to cabbies etc but that was it, and love travelling alone, but partly because it's nice to meet people! There were very few to talk to, it was very exciting to get to beijing where there were suddenly a few people around who spoke english! HK//Shanghai/Beijing etc are more "beaten path" and would have more english for sure. Very exciting trip!

Costa rica

I felt the most non-threatened in Asian countries. Never got harassed by men there, but did throughout Latin America. I haven't heard the best things about Morocco for women, sorry.
Ben
To many do Thailand region... Not off the beaten path, Iceland is a great idea in my opinion. Japan and China I thoroughly enjoyed as well.

Malaysia! The most underrated country in SE Asia. I loved it there!
Paul
Malaysia is really nice...go to kota kinabalu on the island of Borneo....then go over to Labuan and then Brunei. That was one of my fav trips
Sandeep
I took the train between Thailand and Malaysia. Loved it! One gets to see the real country on a train. There was a 12 hour stop in Butterworth station at the border. I took a ferry from the station to Penang, which was beautiful
David
Thailand or Indonesia (Bali)
Jolene
Malaysia is wonderful. I travelled alone there. It is still of the beaten bath, exotic & people are very welcoming of travellers instead of tired of them. Vietnam is also really great.
Sonja
I did India on my own you have to remember you're never really on your own unless you want to be. Chances are excellent you will meet other women on train, bus, etc.
Holly
I agree. I just got back on Thursday from a 12 day trip to southern India, all by myself, independent travel (no tours). Other than my sandals getting stolen at the temple in Thanjavur, the trip was safe and I did meet other travellers.

Denmark is absolutely beautiful. I'm very partial as I married a Dane
You can fly cheap from Denmark all over. So say you fly to Copenhagen (I'd go via Paris or Amsterdam, neither are overrated and absolutely beautiful, I'd consider a layover just to get a taste, but even with hours in Amsterdam you can take the train to the city cheaply for a walk around the canals), tour around Denmark, give yourself a week or more, small country with MUCH to see, including beautiful beaches if you go in summer, then find a cheap flight to Istanbul or maybe Lisbon (portugal is often under people's radar, but very much worth the trip)
I've also heard AMAZING things about Croatia. AMAZING.
And New Zealand is at the top of my must see list!
If you want warm and have time, I'd do Bali.
I ask you this.... What are your interests? Do you have a particular draw? Temperature preference?!
China is amazing, but if you don't want big city Europe, China's crowds are NUTS!
Relax or adventure? Solo solo or meet people? Beach or history? Complete culture shock or satisfy expectations? How uncomfortable are you willing to be to get an amazing experience?
I'm also a vote for Iceland. Although I've not been, I'd go in a heartbeat.
Adelita
Go to Iceland!
Finka
Go to Croatia !
Krista
Japan, China, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos

Tallin, Estonia... Super cool and very safe. I was there alone

Read up on travel blogs about Ljubljana in Slovenia. Economical and everyone loved it. I've moved it way up on my list.

Im from Vietnam. Sapa and Ban Gioc Waterfall is as off the beaten as you can get. it 1000 above sea level. currency is 100 CAD=1.6 millions. and definitely take in the river life of the mekong river before it gone (due to hydro electric dam about to be built)
Adelita
I went to Iceland alone for a week, and it was one of the best trips! Horseback riding across volcanic fields, whale watching, and soaking in hot springs - plus the art and music scene is spectacular. I felt very safe and supported - Icelanders are so warm and friendly. Another suggestion is Scotland - beautiful nature, art and architecture, haunting history, and great Scottish hospitality.
Morocco was also amazing but not everyone felt as happy and safe and content as I did. I felt right at home in that amazing exotic land. Worth considering. Malta is also wonderful but I didn't go alone so I don't know how it would be. Ghent is magical, more so than a Brugges and well worth the visit.
Sherryl
Katherine, when you say "modest" vacation, I'd assumed you meant price. Was I wrong?
Patsy
I'd steer clear of Morocco if travelling alone - - and strike Tunisia off the list as well. Been to both and
Patsy
there's just not enough security (in my mind anyway). Constant hassles by men of every age really dampened the Tunisia trip. I recently went to belix
Patsy
Belize rather - alone - and had a blast. Stayed at a hostel on ambergris quay for a week. All in was only $850. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
Sherryl
I've spent lots a d lots of time in Belize on my own but then,I'm a diver. I know non-divers like it too.
David
I for one am dying for a chance to get down to belize hopefully in the next couple months
Sue
A Calgary (woman) friend of mine runs tours in Morocco. She goes there by herself all the time and says if you take the appropriate precautions you would take in any travel situation, you will be fine. I would strongly recommend contacting her to book a tour -- she knows and loves Morocco, her driver is very safe and knowledgeable. Her name is Elane; here's the web address: http://www.cometothesahara.com/

Hi Sue the link is not working. Is she still in business? We are heading to Morocco in March.

I met Elaine a few months back. She showed us a presentation and wow, very impressive. I don't think you could go wrong with her. If nothing else, have a talk with Elaine. I've been hunting around for her card but doh! As usual not where I thought I'd left it.
Paul
Malta has similar latitude and architecture as morocco. Europe's hidden gem!
Patsy
Malta is definitely on my list : )
David
Take me too lol
Patsy
How quickly can we pack - lol!!
Patsy
A toothbrush and passport is all we really need.....ha ha ha
David

I did a first solo trip teaching English in Spain with Diverbo, great connecting point to join up with new friends and travel together.

Most of south east Asia is safe. Thailand is great, Cambodia beautiful, Vietnam was astonishing to me. Indonesia, Malaysia oh gosh loved it. Super safe for women alone and super cheap! Tons of other travellers to meet with us.
Central America, South America I never had an issue with safety, except when someone tried to steal a backpack off me, and I hit him with a crutch I had with me!
You have to think about zika tho!
Europe has some cheap parts, Croatia, Bolivia, Spain. (Spain has a walking trail that's ancient takes 22 days to complete)
Morocco I went with a girlfriend, and we felt no desire to return. We just didn't feel safe there as much as we did in other countries, we did get followed one night and the men tried to block us in to an area.
So many options ahead of you!
Anne
FIJI! wonderful people, warm, safe and off the beaten path. I felt very safe in Croatia as well.

If safety is your concern you might want look into an affordable travel company that i've used in past many times. I've travelled to Turkey, Morocco and Portugal through them. They're called Travel Talk and offer knowledgable local guides, great accomodations and are very professional. Most travellers that use this company are from New Zealand and Australia since the company is based from there.
Liisa

Hi all! In looking for ideas for a modest vacation a female can safely do alone. Not interested in the big European cities but something a bit off the beaten path. I was looking at Morocco or golden triangle in India but have heard concerns from women travellers. Love to hear some suggestions!
